Cowgirls Roll To 8-0 Victory
September 18, 2016 | Cowgirl Soccer
Sunday's win extended OSU's unbeaten streak to four as the Cowgirls improved to 5-3-2 on the season. UAPB is now 0-5-0.
Eight different Cowgirls scored against the Golden Lions, with three of those – Rachel VanFossen, Morgan McDougal and Lana Duke – recording their first goals of the season. The Big 12's leading scorer, Courtney Dike, tallied a goal and two assists.
"It was good to get a win and get a lot of different girls minutes and see them all contribute," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "It's a game you're favored to win, but you still want to come out and play well and improve on some of the things you've been working on; I felt we did that for the most part.
"We need to build on the positive momentum from the last few weeks. We're unbeaten in our last four, and we feel really good heading into Big 12 play."
OSU scored four times in each half Sunday and took control early when Jaci Jones delivered her fourth goal of the season nine minutes into the match, taking a pass from Dike and converting a shot from the top of the box.
Marlo Zoller netted the Cowgirls' second score in the 18th minute and just 77 seconds later, Natalie Calhoun made it 3-0 when she buried a penalty kick that came as the result of a UAPB handball in the box.
Dike completed OSU's first-half scoring in the 34th minute. After McDougal ripped a shot that caromed off the right post, Dike was there to chip in the rebound and give the Cowgirls a 4-0 advantage that they took into the break.
With the majority of their starters on the bench for much of the second half, the Cowgirls continued to dominate. VanFossen got the scoring started in the 57th minute with the first goal of her OSU career, getting an assist from Bri Woodall on the play.
Up next, it was McDougal getting on the board to make it 6-0 before Anna Beffer – who also had an assist in the contest – collected her second goal of the year. Duke rounded out the scoring with just over a minute remaining in the match.
The Cowgirls finished with a 22-4 advantage in shots while owning a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
Three goalies – Dani Greenlee, Ashton Hierholzer and Michela Ongaro – combined for the shutout. Greenlee was the starter in goal for the first time in her OSU career, while Hierholzer recorded the lone save in the match.
OSU opens Big 12 Conference action this week when it hosts Iowa State Friday night before a Sunday afternoon showdown against Baylor.
