STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team dressed in full pads for the first time this fall as it completed a two-hour practice session at the Sherman E. Smith Training Center Sunday morning. After practice, head coach Mike Gundy shared his thoughts:
Â
On the first practice with full pads:
"We had a good day. It was very competitive. The defense was more aggressive than the offense. Sometimes that happens early in camp, but overall I like the competitiveness. We still have areas that are important to our team that we need to improve on. We turned the ball over a couple of times. Defensively, we gave up a couple of big plays, so we have to minimize those key areas to be successful. It's early in camp, but we're getting some quality work."
Â
On Jordan Burton and Chad Whitener's performance:
"They've been good throughout the summer, and even Jordan, who had a surgery, has been a good leader. Chad is very vocal, so it's their defense. It's time for those guys to be the leaders … and kind of develop that edge on the sideline.
Â
On how Devante Averette is adjusting:
"He's done very well. When I see him, I don't watch them as closely as I do the offense, but he plays with a lot of speed…He does move fast. It's impressive"
Â
On what sticks out to him when he's watching practice:
"Well, I like the group we have. I like the coaches. When I watch the overall operation of our program and practices, it's enjoyable to me because I joke with the media that it could really run itself.
Â
On which new guys are catching his eye:
"The two new corners, Madre (Harper) and Rodarius (Williams). They continue to get better at a much faster pace than what young corners do. Justice Hill is making some plays at the running back spot. I saw (Barry J. Sanders) make a catch today. We're seeing some guys that are young that will be able to help us early on in the year."
