Hovland Earns Runner-Up Finish At European Amateur

MANNIVA, Estonia — Viktor Hovland, an incoming freshman for the Oklahoma State men's golf team, finished second at the European Amateur Championship on Saturday, falling in a seven-hole playoff to Luca Cianchetti at Estonian Golf and Country Club
The duo carded matching totals of 272, 16-under, to force the playoff. With nothing decided through six extra holes, Cianchetti secured the victory with a par on the seventh playoff hole, while Hovland carded a bogey.
En route to a 69 during his final round, Hovland birdied the second and made the turn at even-par 36. The Oslo, Norway native birdied three of the first four holes on his inward nine before carding his lone bogey of the side at the 17th for his 3-under tally.
Hovland entered the final round with a two-stroke lead after setting the course record with a bogey-free 9-under 63. After a birdie at the second, Hovland caught fire with birdies at the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth to go out in 31. Following birdies at the 10th and 11th, he carded his eighth and ninth birdies of the day at the 15th and 18th.
In addition to his rounds of 63 and 69, Hovland carded a 67 to open play before signing for a 73 during his second round.
The European Amateur is conducted by the European Golf Association, which is comprised of 38 member countries. The winner and runner-up are exempt from regional qualifying for The Open Championship.
