STILLWATER – Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy was one of 24 head coaches named to the preseason watch list for the 2016 Dodd Trophy, officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl announced Friday.
The Dodd Trophy is tabbed as "college football's most coveted coaching award" and celebrates the head coach of a team with on-field success, also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
The field named to the watch list includes coaches from all Power 5 conferences, including the ACC (3), Big 12 (3), Big 10 (5), Pac 12 (6), SEC (5), American and Notre Dame.
Gundy already has a history with national coaching recognition, as he was named the 2011 winner of the Paul "Bear" Bryant College Coach of the Year Award and the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award after leading Oklahoma State to a 12-1 record, its first Big 12 championship and BCS bowl game appearance.
He was a finalist for both the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award and the Liberty Mutual National Coach of the Year Award in both 2010 and 2011. He was also the 2010 Big 12 Coach of the Year after leading Oklahoma State to an 11-2 overall record and a share of the Big 12 South title.
Additionally, Gundy was the 2015 AFCA Region 4 Coach of the Year after leading the Cowboys to as high as No. 4 in the Associated Press poll despite being unranked to start the season.
The Dodd Trophy watch list was created through a selection process by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, taking into consideration each program's graduation rate, commitment to service and charity in the community, projected success for the 2016 season and Academic Progress Rate (APR).
Additional watch lists will be released throughout the fall, and the winner will be announced in Atlanta during the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. A panel consisting of all previous Dodd Trophy winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2016 season.
