July 13, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph was recognized Wednesday for more than just his play on the field, as The Wuerffel Trophy included him on its watch list for an award honoring college football's top community servant.
Rudolph is one of 88 players in the country on the list for The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service." It is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach Florida to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
One of nine players from the Big 12 on the list, Rudolph has been nothing short of great during his first two years as a Cowboy, playing at a level that matches some of Oklahoma State's all-time best quarterbacks. The junior holds a 12-3 career record as a starter, with seven of those 12 wins coming away from home, and his 9.1 yards per completion over the span of his career is a school record. Last season, his 264 completions, 424 pass attempts, 3,770 passing yards, 290.0 passing yards per game and 287.3 yards of total offense per game trail only Brandon Weeden in 2010 and 2011 on Oklahoma State's single-season list. Rudolph surpassed 300 yards passing six times and 400 yards three times during his sophomore campaign and he received numerous weekly recognitions.
Additionally, Rudolph was named a Second Team Academic All-Big 12 honoree for his performance in the class room last year.
Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is performed by a National Selection Committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 3 and finalists will be announced on Nov 23. The formal announcement of the 2016 recipient will be on Dec. 6 at the National Football Foundation's press conference in New York City. The presentation of the 2016 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 48th Annual All Sports Association Awards Banquet on Feb. 10, 2017 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
