OMAHA — Behind a stellar pitching performance from sophomore righthander Thomas Hatch, Oklahoma State recorded a 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara in the opening game of the 2016 College World Series on Saturday afternoon in front of 20,956 fans inside TD Ameritrade Park.
En route to his fourth complete game of the season, Hatch scattered five Gaucho hits while striking out seven and walking just one to propel the Cowboys to their first CWS victory since 1993. OSU moved to 42-30 on the year, while UCSB dipped to 42-19-1.
The Pokes had an opportunity to get on the board early after a leadoff single from J.R. Davis in the bottom of the first, but the junior second baseman was left stranded at third.
Hatch then worked out of a jam in the top of the the next frame. After back-to-back hits from UCSB had runners at first and third with one out, the Tulsa, Okla., native retired the next two batters to end the threat.
The Cowboys tallied the game's lone run in the bottom of the fourth. After a leadoff single from senior Corey Hassel, senior Donnie Walton singled through the right side before sophomore Garrett Benge chased Hassel home with a single up the middle.
A UCSB passed ball moved the runners to second and third before senior Conor Costello lined into a double play and junior Dustin Williams flied out to thwart the possibility of a big inning for the Cowboys.
After giving up a one-out single in the fourth, Hatch retired 12 consecutive batters before pinch hitter Billy Fredrick lined a single to right field with one away in the eighth. Hatch quickly worked out of the frame, inducing a UCSB double play grounder to end the inning.
With the win, Hatch improved to 9-2 on the year, while Shane Bieber worked eight innings for the Gauchos and took the loss to fall to 12-4.
The Cowboys advance to play the winner of the Arizona-Miami (Fla.) on Monday night at 6 p.m. (CST). The contest will be televised on ESPN.
