What Records May Fall This Year?
April 10, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Some damage can be done to the Oklahoma State football record book in 2016. A look at the career marks that are in jeopardy for the coming season, broken into two categories – 1) records most likely to be broken and 2) records that are unlikely to be broken, but should still be on the radar screen:
Most Likely To Be Broken This Year
Career Points Scored
Current Record Holder: Dan Bailey – 370 points from 2007-10
Threatening: Ben Grogan – 316 career points from 2013-present
Notable: A 2016 Pro Bowl selection and the most accurate kicker in the history of the National Football League, Bailey served as OSU's kicker for three and a half years. Heading into his senior year of 2010, Bailey was an established kicker, but not a star. In fact, through his junior year, he had converted on 30-of-41 career field goal attempts, which at 73.1 percent is actually a lower percentage than Grogan's three-year field goal percentage of 74.2 (Grogan is 49-of-66 heading into 2016). That said, Bailey became a superstar in 2010 by winning the Lou Groza Award as college football's top kicker after making 27-of-31 field goals and 68-of-70 PATs as a senior. To this point of his career, Grogan has averaged 105.3 points per season. Should he match his career average in 2016, he'd finish with 421 career points, which would comfortably pass Bailey. On the Big 12 level, the career scoring record is 451 points by Baylor's Aaron Jones from 2010-13. The NCAA career scoring record for a kicker is 466 points by Florida State's Dustin Hopkins from 2009-12.
Career PATs Made
Current Record Holder: Dan Bailey – 199 from 2007-10
Threatening: Ben Grogan – 169 from 2013-present
Career PATs Attempted
Current Record Holder: Dan Bailey – 201 from 2007-10
Threatening: Ben Grogan – 173 from 2013-present
Notable: Similar to the scoring record, Grogan should comfortably pass Bailey in both PATs made and attempted. Grogan has averaged 56 successful PATs per year since arriving on campus. Should he hit his average again in 2016, then he would finish with 229 career PATs. For perspective on that, 229 PATs would rank third in Big 12 history, trailing only the 274 from Baylor's Aaron Jones (2010-13) and the 233 from Texas Tech's Alex Trlica (2004-07).
Unlikely To Be Broken This Year, But Keep An Eye Out
Career Pass Completions
Current Record Holder: Brandon Weeden – 767 from 2007-11
Threatening: Mason Rudolph – 313 from 2014-present
Career Pass Attempts
Current Record Holder: Brandon Weeden – 1,103 from 2007-11
Threatening: Mason Rudolph – 510 from 2014-present
Career Passing Yards
Current Record Holder: Brandon Weeden – 9,260 from 2007-11
Threatening – Mason Rudolph – 4,623 from 2014-present
Career Passing Touchdowns
Current Record Holder: Brandon Weeden – 75 from 2007-11
Threatening: Mason Rudolph – 27 from 2014-present
Notable: At this point of his career, it's difficult to establish a true barometer for just how good Rudolph's numbers can be for a couple reasons – 1) he only played three games in 2014, which skews his career average numbers and 2) with J.W. Walsh in the mix last year, Rudolph came off the field more than what would be expected as his career moves forward. So long story short, it would surprise nobody if his numbers take a significant jump this year. For the purposes of this exercise, though, if he matches last season's numbers, his career numbers would improve to 577 completions on 934 attempts with 8,393 passing yards and 48 touchdowns. While those totals would put him short of Weeden, they'd put him firmly in the Weeden-Zac Robinson-Mike Gundy mix atop OSU's career lists in those notable passing categories. For Rudolph, the number that has a chance to spike this year is passing touchdowns, as he often gave way for Walsh in the red zone last year. Going unsaid in all of this is that Rudolph is a junior, and if he turns in comparable or better seasons the next two years, then he should blaze past Weeden's totals in the categories listed above.
