STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team held its second scrimmage of the spring Friday during its 12th practice session at the Sherman E. Smith Training Center. The Cowboys practiced for approximately an hour and a half in full pads, with receiver James Washington and safety Jordan Sterns breaking down the action at the end of the day. Their comments:
Receiver James Washington
On how the scrimmage went for the offense:
"I think it went really well. Our running backs and the o-linemen, they were dominating up front. It was outstanding by the whole offense. Everyone was blocking and we were scoring touchdowns. It was fun."
On what's behind his good performance this spring:
"Just listening to the coaches and taking the preparation and making it to where I can doing everything and come out here and give my effort and expect positive things in return."
On who has impressed him on the defensive side of the ball:
"Ramon Richards. He's definitely gotten better since last season. He and Jordan Sterns and Ashton Lampkin. They're all coming out here every day and giving me their 100 percent effort and helping me get better."
On the backup quarterbacks:
"Taylor Cornelius and John Kolar both did well. John Kolar running the ball and Taylor Cornelius is throwing deep balls. They're working with the running backs and receivers and getting everyone on point. It's great."
On if he's excited for the spring game:
"I'm very excited. Family will be up here and I'll get to show them how good I've gotten over the spring, and I'm getting better every day and we'll be showing out in front of every one."

On how the scrimmage went for the defense:
"It was good. We got a bunch of young guys out there. I liked how we flew around and got to the ball and tried to make plays. I like where we're at, but there's still a lot to improve though. We're looking forward to that every day, coming out here and getting better."
On where the defense needs to improve:
"I think we've got to tackle a little better. Like I said, we had a bunch of young guys, so we mess up on our assignments sometimes, but that just comes with more reps."
On if it's nice to see younger players get reps on the field:
"It's real good. A bunch of those guys work hard and just to see it finally pay off and let them go out there and fly around. You can see them having fun and it often reminds me of my freshman spring when I first went out there, so it's always good to see."
On who has impressed him on the offensive side of the ball:
"Definitely Marcell Ateman and Jalen McCleskey. Both of those guys have challenged the defense with their ability to catch the ball. Then Chris Carson, he's been running the ball real well. Really, just the whole offense and the way they've been competing with us is making us as a defense better."
On what the defense has improved the most this spring:
"I think our energy has been a lot better. We'd come out to practice dull and nobody wants to be out here, but you've seen that leaders are stepping up and taking charge and letting them know this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity every time. You never know when your last practice could be. You could get hurt, and a bunch of guys that went down, I know they will tell you the same thing. So the energy level has been high and we've got to keep it that way."
On how excited he is for the spring game:
"I'm very happy. My little brother and mom and family get to come down. We get to put on a show for the fans and let them know what's coming next year. They'll be excited and I'll be excited and the whole team will be excited, so we'll go out there and make some plays."
