NEW ORLEANS – The Cowboy and Cowgirl track and field teams each appeared in the first official poll of the 2016 season, released Monday by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
After being left out of the preseason top-25, the Cowboys jumped 15 spots to 21 in the week one poll to become the third-highest ranked Big 12 team, behind only fourth-ranked Texas and No. 12 Texas Tech, and ahead of fellow conference affiliate TCU.
On the women's side, the Cowgirls jumped one spot to 23 and are one of five Big 12 teams in the poll.
Cerake Geberkidane is the only Cowboy in the top-35 in the nation in an event, ranking 28th in the 5,000-meter run with his time from the Stanford Invitational.
Four Cowgirls own top-35 spots, with Chase Ealey leading the way at No. 4 in the shot put. Savannah Camacho in the 1,500, Aurora Dybedokken in the 5,000 and Clara Nichols in the 800 are the other remaining Cowgirls with top marks.
Oklahoma State heads to Tucson, Arizona, this weekend to compete in the Jim Click Shootout in the fourth week of the outdoor season. The next rankings will be released April 11.
