Coach Kasey Dunn Talks About the Cowboy Receivers
April 04, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team held its 10th practice of the spring Monday at the Sherman E. Smith Training Center, with the Cowboys practicing for approximately two hours in full pads. At the conclusion of the session, wide receivers coach Kasey Dunn talked about the receivers' progression and how spring practice has gone thus far. His comments:
On how spring practice has gone so far:
"Pretty well, really. There's been our ups and downs and little inconsistencies, but overall it's been good. Guys that we're expecting to make plays are making plays. James (Washington) has had a good spring and Marcell's (Ateman) doing his part. He really finished the year strong and then has continued to progress as long as this spring has gone on. I'm excited about where Marcell is headed right now. It gives us a nice little one-two punch right there. (Chris) Lacy and Jhajuan Seales have really shown that they can make some plays outside on the perimeter too. The guy that's shown some speed is (Jalen) McCleskey. He's doing a great job out there. That little turkey will block his butt off too. He's getting it done and I'm happy with where we are and I'm looking forward to the next practice."
On if he remembers an outside duo like James Washington and Marcell Ateman during his time at OSU:
"I don't. This will be my sixth season coming up and my first year here, obviously with (Justin) Blackmon that was a pretty good crew. There were really good players in there, but top to bottom; top six to seven players, and we've got a couple of kids coming in – I think we're pretty deep and talented at those positions. It's just a matter of going out and executing and doing what we're supposed to do and making sure we're on point with our assignments."
On if there are specific areas of focus for the rest of the spring:
"We've worked hard on run after catch. That's been the big one. I think the blocking really came along midway through the season last year. We were able to get on defenders and stick on them and keep them out of the mix, so I think we've fixed that. The run after catch, right now there's an emphasis for us to take even balls that we catch in one-on-one and put them in the end zone and turn that into even a one-on-one tackling drill. I'm talking about one-on-one against our defensive backs in a pass situation. Obviously we want that in our scrimmages, which showed up last Friday. We were able to make some runs in there and create some space and get away from some of the defenders. That was good to see because it's starting to work itself out."
