OSU Wraps Up Stanford and Bobcat Invitationals
April 02, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – It was a solid day of competition for the Oklahoma State track and field program, Saturday, with the 4X100-meter relay team and Clara Nichols coming away with victories.
Nichols returned to the track Saturday after winning section four of 1,500-meter run to tackle the 800. Nichols was a late entry, but cruised to another heat win in 2:05.87.
"Clara is just on another level right now," coach Dave Smith said. "She finished extremely well in both today's race and yesterday in the 1,500. She's starting to pull away at the end of races and I'm really excited for her. If we can get her into the right race, she's ready to run fast."
Cowgirl sophomore and English international Kaylee Dodd also ran in the 800, finishing second in heat three in 2:07.31. Dodd now has the No. 3 time in the Big 12, while Nichols leads the conference. The Cowgirls now own three of the top-5 best times in the Big 12 this season.
"It's good to see her opening up the season faster than she's ever run outdoors before," Smith said. "She maybe saved a little too much for the end and could have competed for the win, and she knows that, but overall both of them had good days and I think it was a great meet for us out here."
The Cowboy 4X100-meter relay team bounced back at the Bobcat Invitational after a 21st place finish Friday morning at the Texas Relays.
The quartet, led by three-time All-American John Teeters, ran nearly a second faster than at the Relays, winning the event in 40.64 seconds, but still four-hundredths of a second behind their season's best time from the Arkansas Spring Invitational.
Only two Cowboys ran open events Saturday with All-American Sharod Selph and freshman Anthony Grogan Jr., running in the 200-meter dash in San Marcos, Texas.
Selph's time of 21.84 earned him 27th, and Grogan's 21.95 was good enough for 35th.
Next on the schedule for track and field is a short trip to Tucson, Arizona, for the Jim Click Invitational April 9.
