Cowboys Swept By Texas Tech
April 10, 2016 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. — For the first time in the Josh Holliday era, Oklahoma State was swept in a three-game series as 19th-ranked Texas Tech handed the No. 16 Cowboys a 15-5 run-rule loss in seven innings Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Â
The loss dropped OSU to 19-12 on the season and 4-5 in Big 12 Conference play and marked the first time the Cowboys have been swept in a three-game series since the final weekend of the 2012 regular season against Texas A&M in Stillwater. It's also just the sixth time in the 35-year history of Reynolds Stadium that the Pokes have lost more than two consecutive games on their home field.
Â
"Disappointed that things turned out the way they did, but it's a very humbling game," Holliday said. "We came out with a good amount of fight about us and just couldn't get anything going. To Texas Tech's credit, they played well, they swung the bats well and they pitched well enough in the elements to control us.
Â
"We've just got to bounce back. There's nothing you can do about games that have been played and are behind you except learn from them and try to take with you some of the positives that did come out of this series and move forward to ORU and Baylor."
Â
TTU (24-9, 11-1) used a pair of early four-run innings to take control of the game against OSU starter and reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week Jensen Elliott.
Â
Following a scoreless first inning, Tech's Corey Raley led off the second with a home run to left-center field. After back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases, consecutive RBI hits by Michael Davis and Kholeton Sanchez pushed the lead to 3-0 before the fourth run of the frame came home on a double play.
Â
In the third, Davis continued a big day with a three-RBI double before a double by Sanchez made it 8-0. Davis would go on to finish the day 3-for-4 with a career-high seven RBIs.
Â
The visitors led 9-0 before OSU finally got on the scoreboard with a two-out rally in the fifth. After a walk to Garrett McCain, back-to-back RBI doubles by Corey Hassel and J.R. Davis gave the Cowboys their first two runs, and Donnie Walton and Dustin Williams continued the hit parade with run scoring singles to cut the deficit to 9-4.
Â
But that momentum was quickly erased in the sixth when Tech erupted for six runs on six hits, including another bases-loaded, three-RBI double by Davis.
Â
TTU finished the contest with 18 hits, the most by an OSU opponent this season, while the Cowboys collected 12. J.R. Davis, Williams and McCain each had two hits for the Pokes, with Davis picking up two RBIs on the day.
Â
Elliott suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 3-2 after allowing eight runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Â
OSU returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Oral Roberts at 6 p.m., and the Cowboys are back to Big 12 play next weekend in Waco, Texas, against Baylor.
