Hammerschmidt Talks Cowboy Safeties After Practice
March 25, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team held its sixth practice of the spring Friday at the Sherman E. Smith Training Center. The Cowboys wore full pads and practiced for approximately two hours. At the conclusion of the session, safeties coach Dan Hammerschmidt discussed practice and the Cowboy safeties. His comments:
On how practice went:
"I thought it was good until the very end when we gave up a touchdown. I thought we did a good job. Flowers had a nice pick to start the practice. It got kind of physical. There were a lot of high school coaches here so it was getting edgy and you've got to love that as a defense."
On Tre Flowers and Jordan Sterns returning at safety:
"It's great to have all our guys back at safety. We're fairly deep, which means we've got to step up and produce and make some plays. They have been. The first couple of days we got some interceptions. Tre is experienced and Jordan's experienced and really good. Derrick Moncrief is coming on. Jerel is still back there and Dylan Harding. We've got some bodies back there so that should be a strong point on the defense."
On if he's excited to have Derrick Moncrief this season:
"Definitely. A kid that's played that much Division I football and is fired up to be here; he looks the part and he runs around. Once he gets in full football shape and runs around for a few weeks he's going to be really good."
On Kenneth Edison-McGruder contributing as a true freshman last year:
"He did. We just moved him up and he's playing the star; safety-linebacker. He's a great football player and he's getting bigger. We're a little bit worried he could be 250 before you know it. He's a really good football player and we've got to get him on the field."
