Now Introducing Derrick Moncrief
March 24, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State safety Derrick Moncrief has waited his turn to be a contributor for the Cowboys, and now his turn has arrived.
Moncrief, originally from Prattville, Alabama, is at his third school in his collegiate playing career. He began his career in the junior college ranks at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and earned junior college All-America honors for his performance.
His play was enough for him to be named the No. 1 JUCO safety prospect in the country, as well as earn a scholarship to play for the Auburn Tigers, enrolling in school for the 2014 spring semester.
During his first year at the FBS level, Moncrief played in every game for the Tigers in 2014 and started once in a 35-31 win at Ole Miss. He finished the season with 27 tackles and proved he was more than capable of performing well at the Division I level.
Despite his success, he elected to transfer to Oklahoma State and redshirt as a senior last year due to NCAA transfer rules.
Moncrief excelled on the practice field last season and was a valuable member of the scout team, but after a long journey to become a Cowboy his opportunity to play is finally here.
At 6-2, 220 pounds, Moncrief has a prototypical frame for a big-time college safety and has improved his body over the past year. Not only does he look like a college safety, but he has earned a reputation on the practice field as a physical player who can cover ground quickly and who has a nose for the ball.
With a productive offseason and good fall camp, he could make his name known for beyond the practice field in 2016. Regardless, his name is one Cowboy fans should know heading into next season.
