Gundy Meets With Media After Practice
March 23, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team held its fifth practice of the spring Wednesday at the Sherman E. Smith Training Center. The Cowboys wore full pads and practiced for approximately two hours. At the conclusion of the session, coach Mike Gundy met with media at Boone Pickens Stadium. His comments:
Opening statement:
"We had a really good practice today. It was physical. Today was physical. Defense was much more dominant than they had been yesterday and offensively we were able to make up some ground, and then the defense kind of fought through it at the end. We've had some really good practices. They're physical – pads now – and from here on out we'll be in pads, which will make it a lot more fun than just being in a helmet. We're getting good effort from everybody. Mason's coming around, making some plays. Obviously Washington, Seales, Jarwin, those guys. Carson is running the ball really well and Childs. We're getting some really good play out of those guys. I like the progress we're making up front. Larry Williams is helping out a lot, I know some of you guys may want to know about him. Obviously it's really early and just based on total reps, but we're making improvement. Defensively, the guys that we would expect to show up are. Burton is making plays, Chad Whitener is making plays. I like where the ends are. At the safety spot, obviously Sterns is making some plays. Ramon is showing up some. Phillips is doing a nice job. There's not anything out of the ordinary, but we're getting a lot of progress from the guys that we need to. We're getting good effort and their attitude and enthusiasm is very high."
On Marcus Keyes:
"He's coming along. He's got flexibility. He's 302 pounds now. He rolls his hips and that's important to him. He's going to be a good football player for us as he progresses and comes along with his strength and knowledge of defense. He fits what we look for here at Oklahoma State. He loves to play the game. He's competitive and he's got a great attitude."
On Justin Phillips:
"We would have liked to have redshirted him (his freshman year) but obviously he ended up playing 72 plays against Oklahoma and in a bowl game. We felt like we would cheat him in total reps last year based on our depth. If we'd have known that Ryan Simmons was going to go down, you don't redshirt him, but at that moment we'd made a decision so we stuck with it. You can certainly tell from the experience he gained from that year that he's much different than what would be a redshirt sophomore."
