NEW YORK Â - All-Americans Nolan Boyd, Anthony Collica, Austin Marsden and Joe Smith wrapped up their 2016 NCAA Championships with their respective medal matches.
No. 11 seed Anthony Collica electrified the crowd at 149 pounds as he stuck Kent State's Mike DePalma, the No. 10 seed, as the second-period buzzer sounded in the consolation semifinals. He later faced No. 3 Lavion Mayes, who he earlier defeated in a tight quarterfinals match, for third place. The two, once again, kept it a close match, but a late first-period takedown from Mayes ultimately gave him a 3-2 win. Collica finishes his junior season an NCAA fourth-place finisher with All-America honors, six wins over ranked opponents and an overall 29-9 record. The breakout season for the Cowboy will put him in the hunt for 100 career wins next season as he sits at 86-29 overall.
True freshman Joe Smith went 4-2 at his first NCAA championships to finish seventh at 157 pounds. In his final bout, he battled No. 2 seed Tommy Gant of North Carolina. Smith picked up a quick takedown in the first period and pulled even farther ahead with another takedown less than a minute later. He tallied an escape in the second period and added riding time for a 6-3 win. His seventh-place finish makes him the fifth Smith, joining his dad and OSU head coach John and uncles Lee Roy, Mark and Pat, to earn All-American status and gives the family a total of 14 top-eight finishes at the NCAA tournament.
"Of course I want to carry on the family legacy, but if I'm going to win, I going to have to do it on my own. No one else is going to do it for me," Smith said. "That pressure is no different. They did it on their own and now I'm going to do it myself."
Nolan Boyd shut out 10th-seeded Willie Miklus in the consolation semis at 184 pounds. Using the momentum from a first-period takedown, Boyd stayed in control, grabbing an escape and another takedown for a 6-0 win. He went on to finish fourth, the highest finish of his career, after falling to No. 13 Pete  Renda in the third-place bout. Â
Austin Marsden, seeded fourth, fell in his first match of the day to No. 3 Ty Walz of Virginia Tech, 9-4. He ended the afternoon session, taking sixth place after a getting pinned by No. 7 Amarveer Dhesi of Oregon State in the first period. The Cowboy finishes his career as a two-time All-American heavyweight, with a career-high sixth place finish and a 108-22 overall record.
The NCAA finals, which will feature two Cowboys--Dean Heil and Alex Dieringer, will begin at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday. Fans can watch all the action live on ESPN.
