NEW YORK - Oklahoma State wrestling will send three Cowboys to tonight's semifinals of the NCAA Championships. Five other Cowboys are still alive and will wrestle for All-American status tonight.
"It was a tough round. We had tough draws," coach John Smith said. " I felt like we got beat in a couple those matches where, right now, those guys are better than us. I think at '57 and '74 they were just a little bit better than us today. Coming out and winning five of their nine matches, that's a plus. That keeps eight guys in going for the medal rounds and that's a good spot to be in. You've got to have a flawless night tonight. That could be tough to do. I just think people need to lay it out there and make sure they're not holding anything back and put ourselves in the best possible match that can make us an All-American, especially the ones in the consolations."
Dean Heil earned his second-consecutive All-America honors at 141 pounds as he defeated No. 8 Joey Ward of North Carolina in the quarterfinals, avenging his only loss of the season. Heil put the first point on the board, escaping to start the second period, and Ward did the same to start the third. Points began to fly when Heil took down the Tar Heel and tilted him for four points. Ward later reversed the Cowboy, but it was not enough as Heil added riding time for an 8-3 win.
"Great win, but it's on to the next one. You know, it really doesn't matter how I'm wrestling right now. It's just getting wins. That's all that matters to me right now. It doesn't matter if I'm dominating, winning by one, you know, it doesn't matter," said Heil.
Continuing his tear through the NCAA field, Anthony Collica, the No. 11 seed at 149 pounds, upset No. 3 Lavion Mayes of Mizzou in his quarterfinal bout. Collica scored on two escapes, while Mayes picked up a reversal in the third period, but it was Mayes' two stalling calls that gave Collica the advantage and the win. This is Collica's first All-America honor.
"That dude is pretty solid and strong. I just had to keep wrestling hard and stay in good position and I came out on top," Collica said. "We've been through a lot of injuries, which made us even closer as a team. We feed off of each other for sure. I saw Dean win so I was like, 'Why not me too?' We feed off of each other. We've got a good leader in Dieringer. He's got good things to say all the time."
No. 6 Joe Smith, who has had an impressive year as a true freshman wrestling in the NCAA quarterfinals, met Penn State's third-seeded Jason Nolf in the 157-pound bracket. Smith wrestled a hard-fought match and it was all square at 2-2 midway through the second period. Nolf picked up a late takedown to close the period, however, as the momentum carried him to an 11-3 win. Smith still has the chance to make a big impact in the team race, as he can earn All-America status in Friday's second session.
Alex Dieringer defeated No. 9-seed Tanner Weatherman for the third time this season with an 11-5 decision in the 165-pound quarterfinals and became the 14th four-time All-American in school history. Despite not scoring bonus points, Dieringer looked strong, tallying two takedowns in both the first and third periods. Weatherman kept it at a decision as he took down the Cowboy in the third period. It was the first takedown Dieringer has given up this season.
"I'm not very happy about not getting bonus points in this round," Dieringer said. "I'm going to brush it off and get ready for the next one."
The 174-pound bout pitted ninth-seeded Chandler Rogers against Penn State's top-seed Bo Nickal. Nickal, who now has a record of 32-1 on the season, came out strong with a takedown and nearfall to open the match. He continued the pressure won with a 15-4 major decision. Rogers can earn All-America status in Friday night's session.
Nolan Boyd suffered his first loss since Jan. 2, falling to top-seeded Gabe Dean in the 184-pound quarterfinals. Dean scored at least one takedown in each period to take a 10-4 win. Boyd seeks his first All-America honor in tonight's session.
Austin Marsden, too, was sent to the backside of the bracket, falling short of Michigan's Adam Coon in a No. 4 vs. No. 5 heavyweight quarterfinal. Coon's first-period takedown made the difference as he walked away with a 3-2 win.
On the backside of the 197-pound bracket, unseeded Preston Weigel started the day with a notable 4-0 win over No. 13 Jake Smith of West Virginia. He tallied another win over Sam Wheeler, 3-2, to send him to the blood round, where he will wrestle for All-American status.
"I'm just getting after it and going for it," Weigel said. "Today, I felt good. I'll try to come back tonight even better. Those two matches were close. I'll be ready to roll."
The blood round and semifinals will take place Friday night at 7 p.m. CT. Fans can watch the semis on ESPN, while the consolation matches can be found on ESPN3.
