Signing Day Flashback - Emmanuel Ogbah
February 01, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Signing Day for football is Wed., Feb. 3 and leading up to that day, we'll take a look at prominent Mike Gundy-era Cowboys from their days as recruits from the high school ranks. Today's signee, Emmanuel Ogbah, came from the signing class of 2012.
An All-American and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, Ogbah ranked among the most disruptive players in the country in 2015. He dominated opposing offensive linemen with his ability to both power rush and speed rush off the edge and he was also effective against the run. Ogbah finished his three-year OSU career with 28 sacks and a school-record 26 quarterback hurries. His 64 tackles in 2015 were the most for a defensive lineman during the Mike Gundy era (2005-present).
Ogbah came to OSU weighing 230 pounds, but developed and developed to where he was listed at 275 in his senior year. Here's what he looked like as a recruit coming out of Houston's George Bush HS on signing day, 2012:
Height: 6-4
Weight: 230
Rivals.com – Three stars
Scout.com – Four stars
ESPN.com – Three stars
High school accolades: Was a finalist for the greater Houston defensive player of the year … District defensive MVP … Houston metro first teamer … Had 57 tackles as a senior, including 47 solo stops, with six sacks, two forced fumbles and a recovered fumble ... Received recruiting attention from Arizona and Texas Tech, among others … Attended the same high school as OSU All-American and Pro Bowl offensive lineman Russell Okung of the Seattle Seahawks.
Excerpt from ESPN.com analysis: "…He needs to keep developing as a pass rusher and learn to use his reach as more of a weapon and develop a plan and not attack the whole man and get caught up. Ogbah needs to keep developing aspects of his game and strive for more consistency in areas, but he does display some upside. He is a kid who we feel could benefit from a red-shirt, but in some time demonstrates the tools that could allow him to grow into a very productive college defender."
