Seven Reasons Why OSU’s Win Over Kansas State Mattered
November 06, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team held on for a 43-37 win over Kansas State Saturday that included a 457-yard, five-touchdown passing day from quarterback Mason Rudolph. It also improved the Cowboys' record to 10-1 in their last 11 games decided by less than 10 points. Some other key notes on the win:
The Oklahoma State win…
• Improved the Cowboys to 8-1 in their last nine true road games, dating back to 2014.
• Improved the Cowboys to 5-1 in Big 12 play, marking the sixth time in the last eight seasons that the Cowboys have won at least five of their first six conference games.
• Marked the 11th straight season in which Mike Gundy has led the Cowboys to at least seven victories.
• Marked the Cowboys' sixth win in their last eight meetings with the Wildcats and their first win in Manhattan since 2010 and just the second since 1988 when Mike Gundy quarterbacked the Cowboys to a win.
• Improved the Cowboys to 39-24 all-time against Kansas State and 18-15 against the Wildcats in Manhattan.
• Improved the Cowboys to 51-6 in their last 57 games against unranked opponents, dating back to 2010.
• Improved the Cowboys to 42-17 in Big 12 Conference games since 2010.
Standout performers included the following:
Offense
Mason Rudolph | Quarterback | 6-5 | 235 | Junior | Rock Hill, S.C.
• Quarterback Mason Rudolph was at the center of Oklahoma State's 43-37 win at Kansas State by completing 29-of-38 passes for 457 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. His performance yielded a 210.2 pass efficiency rating, which was the highest for any Big 12 quarterback last week (min. 15 pass attempts).
• For the eighth time in his career, Rudolph led the Cowboys to victory despite trailing in the second half. OSU was behind, 37-28, with just under eight minutes left when Rudolph connected with James Washington on a deep post route that produced an 82-yard touchdown that swung momentum and put OSU in position to win. Following a defensive stop, Rudolph then quarterbacked what amounted to the game-winning drive on the following possession.
• Rudolph's 457 passing yards in the win were good for the second-highest total ever for an Oklahoma State quarterback away from Boone Pickens Stadium.
• On the year, Rudolph ranks sixth nationally with 332.1 passing yards per game and is ninth nationally in both pass efficiency (161.0) and yards per pass attempt (9.1). Additionally, he ranks among the top 25 in the country in passing touchdowns, points responsible for, total offense, completion percentage, completions per game and yards per completion.
Defense
Vincent Taylor | Defensive Tackle | 6-3 | 310 | R-Junior | San Antonio, TX
• Defensive tackle Vincent Taylor's stat line of six tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack in Oklahoma State's road win at Kansas State was nice, but it was the context that made those numbers important.
• Two of Taylor's three tackles for loss came in crucial fourth-quarter situations. The first of those two came on a third-and-three and forced K-State to punt the ball back to the Cowboys for what amounted to the game-winning drive. The second came on a third-and-one situation on the OSU 11-yard line when K-State needed a touchdown to win.
• Taylor's third tackle for loss was a second-quarter sack that also came on a third down play. That sack upped his season total to 5.5, a mark that is the highest ever for an interior defensive lineman at Oklahoma State during the Mike Gundy era (2005-present), surpassing the 5.0 he had last season.
• Taylor has six tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in his last two games, both of which contributed to Oklahoma State wins over formidable opponents in West Virginia and Kansas State.
• On the year, Taylor has 36 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and he leads the nation with three blocked kicks.
• Taylor's 9.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks are the highest totals for any interior lineman in the Big 12 this season.
