Collica Tops Mayes at NWCA All-Star Classic
November 05, 2016 | Cowboy Wrestling
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Oklahoma State wrestling senior Anthony Collica recording a 7-5 decision over No. 3 Lavion Mayes of Missouri in the 149-pound match at the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic Saturday night at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center.
Â
Mayes attacked early, scoring a takedown in the opening 10 seconds of the match to take an early 2-0 lead. After a Collica escape, the Cowboy trailed 2-1 after the first period. Collica would answer in the second, however, and a late takedown inside of 25 seconds gave the senior a 5-4 lead after two frames.
Â
Collica opened the third period on top, but Mayes recorded an escape early on to tie the match at five apiece. With under a minute left, Collica made his move, scoring a takedown with 45 seconds left to take a 7-5 advantage that he would retain for the decision.
Â
Although Saturday's match doesn't count toward official records, some intrigue was added with Collica and Mayes' history. In six prior matches against each other, the pair have split 3-3. Mayes was victorious in the last meeting at last year's NCAA Championships, defeating Collica in the third-place match.
Â
A Solon, Ohio native, Collica wrestled in front of a nice cheering section in his return home to Cleveland. The Solon High School product tallied a 170-14 record on the way to three Ohio state championships in his prep career.
Â
The top-ranked Cowboys are set to open up the 2016-17 dual season Sunday afternoon in Miami, Okla., as they'll take on Bucknell at NEO Fieldhouse at 2 p.m.
