High Stakes Bedlam … Yet Again
November 29, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The Bedlam football game is Saturday in Norman and for the second straight year, it's a winner-take-all battle for the Big 12 championship featuring two teams who both carry top-10 national rankings into the contest.
Saturday's game marks the sixth time in the last nine years that Bedlam has had a direct impact on who won the Big 12. A look:
With the Big 12 title on the line more often than not, it's clear that since 2010, the road to the Big 12 championship runs through Bedlam. This should not come as a surprise, as the Sooners and Cowboys have been the league's two top teams this decade. At 48-13 in league games since 2010, OU has the best record in the Big 12 during that span. Second is OSU at 44-17 and the four-game difference between the two is narrower than the gap between OSU and third-place Baylor.
More recently, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are the only two Big 12 teams who have been ranked in every set of the College Football Playoff rankings since the beginning of last season.
So what does that all mean for Saturday? It means that once again, the Big 12's two best teams will settle it on the field in Bedlam.
Saturday's game marks the sixth time in the last nine years that Bedlam has had a direct impact on who won the Big 12. A look:
- In 2008, winning Bedlam sent Oklahoma to the Big 12 championship game.
- In 2010, losing Bedlam cost Oklahoma State an appearance in the Big 12 championship game.
- In 2011, the Cowboys clinched an outright Big 12 championship by winning Bedlam. Losing Bedlam cost the Sooners a share of the Big 12 title that year.
- OSU had a chance to clinch the Big 12 outright in 2013, but the Sooners' surprising Bedlam win ended those hopes and set the stage for Baylor to clinch the league title later that night.
- In 2015, Oklahoma clinched the Big 12 title with a win. Oklahoma State would have been the Big 12 champion had it won Bedlam.
- In 2016, the Bedlam winner is the outright Big 12 champion.
