Washington Named Biletnikoff Award Semifinalist
November 14, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State wide receiver James Washington is one of 10 semifinalists for the 2016 Biletnikoff Award, the Tallahassee Quarterback Club (TQC) Foundation, Inc., announced today.
The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the outstanding receiver in college football. Any player who catches a pass, regardless of position, is eligible for the award.
Coming from the tiny town of Stamford, Texas (population 3,124), Washington has been Oklahoma State's biggest homerun threat each of the past two years. He is the only player in the country this season who has caught more than 50 passes with an average greater than 20 yards per catch. He's also the only player in the country this year who has three receptions of at least 80 yards.
Washington has surpassed 100 yards receiving in 11 games during his career, including five times this season and four times in his last five games.
The junior had a historic performance with nine catches for 296 yards and two touchdowns to help lead the Cowboys to victory over previously-unbeaten Pittsburgh in week three. Washington's yardage marked the second-most in a single game for any player in the nation this season, the second-highest single-game mark in school history and the fourth-most in Big 12 history. His 32.9 yards per reception in that game set a single-game school record (min. seven catches), and it marked the third time in his career that he has averaged more than 32 yards per catch in a game. No other Cowboy has accomplished that feat more than once.
He ranks eighth nationally in receiving yards (1,132), second nationally in 30-plus yard receptions (13), 10th in yards per reception (20.21) and has caught a pass in 29 straight games.
Additionally, his career average of 46.24 yards per touchdown reception ranks second among all active players, even though his 25 career touchdown catches far exceed anyone else in the top five of that category.
Washington is one of two players from the Big 12 to be named a semifinalist for the award. The group of 10 semifinalists was decided through a vote by the members of the Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee from Nov. 7-13.
The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation recently opened the 2016 FanVote and FanForum, where every fan may vote once daily on the Biletnikoff Award FanVote page. The aggregate fan tally will be counted as one official vote to determine the three finalists, who will be announced Nov. 21, and the winner.
The 2016 Biletnikoff Award winner will be announced live on Dec. 8 on The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN. The winner will be presented his trophy at the Biletnikoff Award Banquet at the University Center Club at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Feb. 18, 2017.
