Sinor Named Ray Guy Award Semifinalist
November 11, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State punter Zach Sinor is one of 10 semifinalists for the 2016 Ray Guy Award, the Augusta Sports Council and the Ray Guy Award committee announced today.
Sinor was chosen from a field of 66 candidates to be a semifinalist for the award, which is given annually to the best college punter in the country.
When it comes to pinning an opponent deep in its own territory, no one is better than Sinor. An incredible 60 percent of his punts have pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line, a mark which leads the nation by a considerable margin, with the second-best mark sitting at 54.5 percent. Of his 40 punts this year, 24 have been downed inside the opponent 20-yard line.
On top of that, only one of Sinor's punts this year has resulted in a touchback. Among FBS punters who have a minimum of 20 punts downed inside the opponent 20-yard line this season, Sinor ranks second nationally in fewest punts resulting in a touchback.
Thanks largely to Sinor's ability to target punt with hang time, Oklahoma State enters this week ranked ninth nationally by only allowing 2.25 yards per punt return. If the season ended today, 2.25 yards per punt return would be a school record, topping the previous best of 3.16 yards per punt return, set in 2014.
Candidates for the 2016 Ray Guy Award were evaluated by the Ray Guy Award committee on their overall statistics and contribution to the team.
A national voting body of Football Bowling Subdivision (FBS) coaches, sports information directors, national media and former Ray Guy Award winners will decide the three award finalists, who will be announced on Nov. 22. Voters will then vote again to decide the winner, who will be announced live Dec. 8 at the The Home Depot College Football Awards in Atlanta, Georgia.
