What the Media Are Saying: OSU vs. West Virginia
October 29, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – America's biggest and best Homecoming celebration is officially here. The Cowboys take on West Virginia today at 11 a.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium. There's plenty riding on this year's Homecoming game, as the Cowboys host a top-10 opponent in Stillwater.
There's been plenty of talk surrounding the game and several other storylines as well. One of the most covered ones is the fact that an OSU win would mark Mike Gundy's 100th career win as a head coach.
Mark Cooper of the Tulsa World wrote about the significance of that mark as well as several other aspects of the game. The Tulsa World's photo department also put together a great gallery looking back at all 99 of Coach Gundy's wins thus far.
The Oklahoman's Kyle Fredrickson detailed one reason for the Cowboys success in 2016, citing a vast improvement in OSU's kick coverage. Fredrickson wrote "Of OSU's 44 kickoffs against Power 5 teams this season, opponents' starting field position has exceeded the 25-yard-line only four times, and not once since the Cowboys' beat Pittsburgh, 45-38, on Sept. 17."
ESPN's Max Olson covered another reason for OSU's success, detailing the impact Justice Hill has made in the run game. Olson noted that "The kid is averaging 4.8 yards on first down, 5.5 on second down and 6.6 on third down in Big 12 games. His play is giving the Cowboys some serious offensive versatility."
As far as personal interest pieces, Fredrickson and ESPN's Jake Trotter both put together some great stories this week.
Fredrickson visited with a few remaining members of the 1945 Oklahoma A&M national championship team and found out what the championship has meant to them, as well as a few great memories from that historic season.
Trotter's story focused on defensive tackle Vincent Taylor and how he and his family grew up and grew together in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
With all the media coverage surrounding today's game, it should be a fun one to watch on America's biggest and best Homecoming celebration. If you can't make it to the game, then be sure to catch it live on FOX at 11 a.m., with Joe Davis, Brady Quinn and Jenny Taft on the call.
