Eight Reasons Why OSU’s Win Over Kansas Mattered
October 23, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team knocked off the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday in Lawrence, 44-20, to bring its season record to 5-2. The Cowboys added three takeaways to their turnover numbers on the year and put up more points on the Jayhawks than any either team has in Lawrence this season. Some other key notes on the win:
The Oklahoma State win…
• Brought Mike Gundy to within one victory of the 100-win mark for his career. He is now 99-49 as OSU's head coach in his 12th year at his alma mater.
• Improved the Cowboys to 8-1 in their last nine true road games, dating back to 2014.
• Marked its seventh straight over Kansas and its 12th in the last 13 meetings with the Jayhawks. The Cowboys have not lost to Kansas since 2007 and have not lost to the Jayhawks in Lawrence since 1994.
• Increased the Cowboys' advantage in the all-time series against Kansas to 36-29-2. The series dates back to 1923.
• Improved the Cowboys to 21-15-1 all-time against Kansas in Lawrence.
• Improved Mike Gundy's record against Kansas to 8-1.
• Improved the Cowboys to 40-17 in Big 12 Conference games since 2010.
• Improved the Cowboys to 50-6 in their last 56 games against unranked opponents, dating back to 2010.
Standout performers included the following:
Offense
Justice Hill | Running Back | 5-10 | 171 | Freshman | Tulsa, Oklahoma
• Justice Hill carried 22 times for 162 yards and a touchdown to lead Oklahoma State to 44-20 road win over Kansas. Hill's 162 rushing yards were the second-highest total ever for an Oklahoma State true freshman, trailing only Thurman Thomas's 206 rushing yards against Kansas State in 1984.
• Hill's 162 rushing yards against the Jayhawks were the most for any FBS freshman last week.
• Including his effort against the Jayhawks, Hill's average of 119.0 rushing yards per game in Big 12 play ranks third in the league. He is the only freshman who ranks in the top 10 in rushing yards per game in conference play.
• Hill's performance against Kansas marked his third 100-yard rushing effort against a Big 12 opponent this year, as he had 135 yards against Texas and 122 yards against Baylor. He is one of only three OSU true freshmen to post three 100-yard rushing games in a single season, joining Thurman Thomas (1984) and Andre Richardson (1994).
• On the year, Hill ranks second among FBS freshmen with 80.7 rushing yards per game. His 565 rushing yards are the most for an Oklahoma State freshman since Kendall Hunter had 696 in 2007.
Defense
Devante Averette | Linebacker | 5-11 | 230 | R-Senior | Detriot, Michigan
• Oklahoma State linebacker Devante Averette logged seven tackles, had a tackle for loss and recovered a fumble in the Cowboys' 44-20 win at Kansas.
• Averette's fumble recovery was his third of the season – a mark that leads the Big 12 and ranks second nationally.
• On the year, Averette leads the Cowboys with 47 tackles. He also has 4.5 tackles for loss and two fumbles forced on the year.
Special Teams
Ben Grogan | Kicker | 6-1 | 190 | Senior | Arlington, Texas
• Ben Grogan was perfect on his three field goal attempts and his five PAT attempts in Oklahoma State's 44-20 win over Kansas, but it was the context in which those kicks came that made his day particularly impressive, as Grogan became the all-time scoring leader in OSU history during the win over the Jayhawks.
• With 383 career points, not only is Grogan the Cowboys' all-time leading scorer, but he is also the Big 12's active leader and ranks fourth among all active FBS players.
• On the year, Grogan leads the Big 12 with 9.6 points per game and his 11 field goals made also top the conference charts.
• Grogan has made each of his last seven field goal attempts.
