October 02, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State football program picked up a 49-31 win over Texas Saturday, improving to 3-2 on the season. The Cowboys scored the most points they've ever scored against the Longhorns and matched a school record with three blocked kicks in the game. Some other key notes on the win:
The Oklahoma State win…
• Was the Cowboys' fifth in their last seven meetings with Texas.
• Marked the third time that the Cowboys have beaten a ranked Texas team. The previous two wins came in 2011 and 2013.
• Snapped Texas' eight-game winning streak over the Cowboys in Stillwater that dated back to 1997.
• Was Mike Gundy's fifth career win over Texas. Prior to Gundy, no other OSU coach had beaten the Longhorns more than once.
• Improved the Cowboys to 38-17 in Big 12 Conference games since 2010.
• Improved the Cowboys to 27-8 in their last 35 games played against teams from the state of Texas.
• Marked the 18th time that the Cowboys have beaten an opponent ranked in the top 25 of the AP poll since Mike Gundy took over as head coach in 2005.
• Marked the 11th time that the Cowboys have beaten a ranked opponent at Boone Pickens Stadium under Mike Gundy.
• Improved the Cowboys to 29-7 in their last 36 home games under Gundy.
• Marked the ninth time in the last 10 seasons that the Cowboys have won their Big 12 home opener.
• Brought Gundy to within three victories of the 100-win mark for his career.
Standout performers included the following:
Offense
Mason Rudolph | Quarterback | 6-5 | 235 | Junior | Rock Hill, S.C.
• Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph completed 19 of 28 passes for 392 yards with three touchdowns against zero interceptions in leading unranked Oklahoma State to a 49-31 win over No. 22 Texas. He accounted for a fourth touchdown when he rushed for a 10-yard score in the second quarter.
• Rudolph's performance against the Longhorns yielded a 220.81 passer rating, which was the highest among Big 12 signal callers who attempted a minimum of 25 passes last week. According to ESPN, Rudolph's QBR of 93.0 against Texas ranked third nationally among quarterbacks facing a ranked opponent.
• Of his 19 completions against the Longhorns, eight were for 20 yards or longer, including touchdown passes of 54 and 52 yards.
• Rudolph finished the first half with 310 passing yards, marking just the fourth time in school history that a Cowboy has passed for more than 300 yards in a half.
• On the year, Rudolph ranks seventh nationally with 1,688 passing yards. His 335.5 passing yards per game in Big 12 play leads the league.
Justice Hill | Running Back | 5-10 | 171 | Freshman | Tulsa, Okla.
• For the second consecutive week, Oklahoma State freshman Justice Hill rushed for more than 100 yards against a ranked opponent, this time going for 135 yards on 25 carries with a touchdown to help lead the unranked Cowboys to a 49-31 victory over No. 22 Texas.
• Hill's second touch of the game resulted in a 30-yard touchdown run. He added a 23-yard rush in the third quarter.
• His 135 yards rushing were the most ever for an Oklahoma State true freshman against Texas and were the ninth-most for a true freshman Cowboy in any game. They were also the most for any Big 12 newcomer this season.
• When Hill's effort against Texas is combined with his 122 rushing yards against Baylor in OSU's previous game, he became the first true freshman in OSU history to rush for more than 100 yards in back-to-back games against ranked opponents.
• Hill is averaging 128.5 rushing yards per game against Big 12 opposition, a mark that ranks second in the league. His 5.7 yards per carry in conference play leads all Big 12 running backs with at least 30 rushing attempts.
Defense
Vincent Taylor | Defensive Tackle | 6-3 | 310 | Redshirt Junior | San Antonio, Texas
• Oklahoma State defensive tackle Vincent Taylor blocked two PAT attempts in the first half of the Cowboys' 49-31 win over No. 22 Texas. In doing so, Taylor matched a school record for most blocked kicks in a game.
• One of his blocked kicks was spectacular, as he bullied his way through the heart of the Longhorn line, then blocked the kick, scooped it up, ran it to about the 30-yard line before calmly pitching back to safety Tre Flowers, who took it the rest of the way for a two-point conversion.
• In addition to his two blocks, Taylor also had two tackles and a quarterback hurry in the game.
• Taylor is the NCAA leader with three blocked kicks this season, a mark that already ties for second on OSU's single-season list. In his career, Taylor has blocked four kicks, which is just one off the school record.
Special Teams
Ben Grogan | Kicker | 6-1 | 190 | Senior | Arlington, Texas
• With two field goals and five PATs, kicker Ben Grogan accounted for 11 points in Oklahoma State's 49-31 win over No. 22 Texas. Most notable, however, is that by doing so, Grogan passed Barry Sanders for second on OSU's career scoring chart. Last week's effort against the Longhorns increased Grogan's career scoring total to 361 points. Sanders had 360 from 1986-88.
• Grogan needs only nine points to match Dan Bailey's school-record total of 370.
• He is the Big 12's active career leader with 361 points, a mark that ties for second nationally.
