Signing Day Flashback - Lane Taylor
January 28, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Signing Day for football is Wed., Feb. 3 and leading up to that day, we'll take a look at prominent Mike Gundy-era Cowboys from their days as recruits from the high school ranks.
First is offensive lineman Lane Taylor. Taylor started 47 games at offensive guard on some of the best teams in Oklahoma State football history. He was a unanimous first-team All-Big 12 honoree in 2012 and earned honorable mention All-Big 12 accolades in 2011.
During his time with the Cowboys, he was a starter for a Big 12-champion squad and helped OSU to the Cotton Bowl and to wins in the Fiesta Bowl, the Alamo Bowl and in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.
After redshirting in 2008, Taylor did not appear on the depth chart for the first two games of 2009, but became one of the best stories of the season when he was inserted into the starting lineup in week three against Rice. He held that position for the rest of the season and helped the Cowboys lead the Big 12 in rushing and rank among the top 10 offensive lines in the country in fewest sacks allowed.
Taylor did not allow a sack in 2011 or in 2012 and was a key reason for those two OSU offenses ranking as the two best in school history.
Taylor just finished his third season with the Green Bay Packers and started two games for a Green Bay squad that won 10 games and made the playoffs.
Here's what Taylor looked like as a recruit coming out of Arlington Martin HS on signing day, 2008:
Height: 6-2
Weight: 300
Rivals.com – Two stars
Scout.com – Two stars
ESPN.com – No stars
High school accolades: An honorable mention Class 5A all-stater by the Associated Press … An all-district pick … A member of the Texas Football Magazine top 300 and was listed among the top 215 prospects in Texas by Scout.com … Scout also considered him the nation's 88th best prospect at guard … Was the largest member of the incoming high school class in 2008 at 300 pounds.
ESPN.com analysis: "…Taylor comes across as a hard-working kid. May not be the most athletic prospect but has some tenacity and gives the effort to compensate for the skill he lacks. With some time to develop, he could be a solid guard in a run-oriented offense."
