January 24, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State women's tennis swept No. 26 Northwestern, 4-0, in front of another capacity crowd inside the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center on Sunday.
The match marked the second victory over a ranked opponent in two days. With the win, the Cowgirls advance to the ITA National Team Indoors, held February 5-8 in Madison, Wisconsin.
OSU outscored its opponents, 8-0, in two matches during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
"Overall, I thought it was a good weekend," coach Chris Young said. "I thought our girls really came out and played well."
The Cowgirls took the first point of the match with Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic winning the final doubles match on court three. Adamovic and Babic defeated Manon Peri and Lee Or, 6-3.
The Pokes and Wildcats split the first two doubles matches. The No. 23 duo of Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari had little trouble against Alicia Barnett and Erin Larner on court two, winning 6-1.
In a showdown of two top-10 pairings, No. 7 Maddie Lipp and Alex Chatt defeated No. 9 Maria Alvarez and Kelsey Laurente, 6-2.
In singles play, the Cowgirls clinched the match with wins on courts five, six and four.
Freshman Katarina Stresnakova stretched the lead for the Cowgirls with a straight set victory against Peri on court five, 6-1, 6-2.
"Katarina was a big difference maker for us today," Young said. "Her presence has made our lineup stronger and today she really showed what she's capable of doing."
Tur Mari provided a spark for the Cowgirls on court six against the Wildcats' Peri. The native of Spain won, 6-4, 6-2, to give the Cowgirls a three point lead.
Laurente capped the match and the weekend for the Pokes. The Cowgirl senior took down Chatt in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
"Kelsey has done a great job this semester of being a good leader for us on the court and today that showed," Young said.
The Cowgirls return to action on Jan. 30 against Wichita State inside the Greenwood Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
