Cowboys Send Five to Scuffle Finals

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Five Cowboys wrestlers advanced to the finals of the Southern Scuffle and stands in second place, 12.5 points behind Penn State.
"When you look at the day, it wasn't bad from the standpoint of putting five wrestlers in the finals," head coach John Smith said. "We lost a tight one at 174 and he didn't really recover. You have to recover quickly after you lose at events like this. I'm looking forward to tonight and seeing our guys wrestle hard."
The morning began with seven of the 11 Cowboys in the quarterfinals advancing to the semifinals.
Eddie Klimara had solid match against Minnesota's Ethan Lizak in the 125-pound quarterfinals. The Cowboy picked up a pair of reversals to take a lead, but capitalized on an opportunity to put Lizak to his back and get the fall with one second left in the match. In the semis, Klimara faced No. 10-seed Fleetwood of Minnesota. His three takedowns and reversal gave him an advantage and a 9-3 win to send him to the finals. He will face No. 1-seed Nico Megaludis of Penn State in tonight's finals.
At 133 pounds, Kaid Brock had a slow start against No. 5-seed Josh Martinez of Air Force. Brock held only a 5-4 lead after the first period, but went on to notch a reversal and a takedown to take a 10-6 win. Brock took on No. 1 Nahshon Garrett in the semis. Garrett opened scoring with a takedown. After a big mat return for Garrett, Brock was injured and defaulted the match.
Dean Heil faced the ninth-seed Kade Moss of Penn State in the quarterfinals at 141 pounds. The top-ranked Cowboy racked up four takedowns for an 8-5 win to advance to the semis, where he met up with No. 4 Tommy Thorn of Minnesota. Heil notched a takedown 30 seconds into the match and never lost the lead to go on to win it 10-7. He is slated to face No. 3-seed Joey McKenna of Stanford in the finals.
Wrestling unattached, Joe Smith advanced to the semifinals at 157 pounds. Smith face tenth-seed Zack Beitz of Penn State, who he scored three takedowns on in the first period. The Cowboy went on to collect two more takedowns and a 12-4 major decision. He then faced Ian Brown of Lehigh in the semifinals, who he scored four takedowns on with a set of back points en route to his 12-6 win. It will be a No. 1-seed vs. No. 2-seed finals matchup as Smith will take on Penn State's Jason Nolf.
Alex Dieringer collected his eighth and ninth-straight win with bonus points after sticking Lehigh's Ryan Preisch, the eighth-seed. He got his another pin in the semis, taking out North Carolina's John Staudenmayer in the first period in 1:14. The two-time NCAA champ will face No. 10 Logan Massa of Michigan in the finals as he seeks his third Southern Scuffle title.
At 174 pounds, No. 2 Kyle Crutchmer faced tenth-seeded Casey Kent from Penn. Crutchmer struck first with a takedown and maintained his lead throughout the match, winning 11-5. In the semifinals, Crutchmer faced a fierce Ethan Ramos of UNC, who was seeded third. Ramos got the first takedown, but Crutchmer tied it up with an escape to end the first and the beginning of the third. In the third period, Ramos scored two escapes and a takedown, while Crutchmer picked up just one escape and a takedown and was defeated, 6-5. In the consolation semis, Crutchmer took on fellow Cowboy Chandler Rogers. Rogers took the match 6-4 and Crutchmer will wrestle for fifth tonight.
Austin Marsden was the final Poke to advance to the semis after a nail-biting 4-1 win over No. 9 Nathan Butler of Stanford. The bout was tied 1-1 after regulation. With no points scored in sudden victory, Marsden rode out Butler in the tiebreaker and managed to tally his own escape and a takedown to win it. Marsden went on to produce a more decisive 4-1 win in the semis, scoring a takedown in the third period. He will go head-to-head with No. 3-seed Denzel Dejournette of Appalachian State in the finals.
Five more Cowboys on secured a spot on the podium, wrestling on the backside of their respective brackets.
At 125, Eli Hale dropped a 15-5 match to No.1 Megaludis in the quarterfinals. In the consos, he went 1-1 and will wrestle for seventh place tonight.
Anthony Collica picked up four wins on the backside today, including a 7-4 win over six-seed Patricio Lugo of Edinboro. He fell in the conso semis to No. 4 Matt Cimato and will wrestle for fifth tonight.
Chandler Rogers was on the losing end of a battle of cradles with No. 1 Brian Realbuto of Cornell in the quarterfinals. Both had cradles locked up and put each other to their backs, but it was Realbuto who was awarded the pin in 1:21. Rogers then went on to pick up two pins in the consolation bracket. A 6-4 win in a tightly contested match between Rogers and Crutchmer will pit Rogers against Casey Kent in the third-place match at 174 pounds.
Both Cowboys at 184 pounds guaranteed themselves top-eight finishes after falling in the quarterfinals and bouncing back in the consolation round of 12.
Jordan Rogers fell to No. 1 Gabe Dean, 16-6, but followed his little brother's footsteps and picked up a pin in the consolations over Heino of Campbell in 2:01. He dropped a 24-10 match to No. 3 Lorenzo Thomas of Penn in the consolation semifinals after leading 8-0. He will face Boyd in the eighth-place bout tonight.
Nolan Boyd fell to No. 3 Thomas in the championship quarterfinals, but picked up a pair of wins on the backside, before suffering a 11-6 loss to Mat Miller of Navy.
Five Cowboys were knocked out of the tournament during the morning session, including Joe Schumacher (141), Jonce Blaylock (149), Hestin Lamons (157), Preston Weigel (197) and Andrew Marsden (197).
"There was a lot of good this morning and a little not so good," associate head coach Eric Guerrero said. "As we get into the heart of this tournament, it's time to step it up. They're wrestling as a team right now and that's a good sign right now of the things to come. We definitely have to continue with a bonus-point mentality tonight."
The finals are set to begin at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
