Cowgirls Candidates For Senior CLASS Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Oklahoma State's Madison Mercado and Allie Stephenson have been selected as candidates for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award in women's collegiate soccer, it was announced today.

The Cowgirl duo comprises two of the 30 candidates for the award, which focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages them to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their community.
Â
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement For Staying In School, the Senior CLASS Award honors student-athletes who excel both on and off the field; the student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition.

Mercado graduated with a degree in sports management last May and is currently pursuing her Master's in health and human performance. A three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection, she finished her undergraduate studies with a 3.677 grade point average.

A native of Sapulpa, Okla., Mercado is heavily involved in the Stillwater community and has served as a volunteer with Read Across America, Mobile Meals, Race for the Cure, the Humane Society and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, among others.

On the field, Mercado is a two-time All-Big 12 performer who has proven her versatility as a midfielder and forward. In 63 career games, she has 13 goals and 10 assists and has ranked second on OSU in scoring in each of her first three collegiate seasons.

Stephenson has also shined on and off the field. The finance major maintains a 3.346 GPA and is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team performer as a well as a 2014 NSCAA All-South Region Scholar-Athlete Second Team honoree.

As a volunteer in the Stillwater community, Stephenson has served with the YMCA and Humane Society as well as the Adopt-An-Angel Tree program and the Nike N7 Youth Movement.

Stephenson, who hails from Lee's Summit, Mo., has started 65 games in her OSU career and tallied 14 goals and 12 assists. She is a two-time All-Big 12 and NSCAA All-Central Region selection at midfielder, including garnering All-Big 12 First Team honors as a junior.

The initial list of 30 candidates for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season with the winner announced during the NCAA Women's College Cup in December.
