Seven Reasons Why OSU’s Win At Texas Mattered
September 27, 2015 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State was a 30-27 winner at Texas on Saturday. With the win, the Cowboys moved to 4-0 on the year and 1-0 in Big 12 play. Here are seven more reasons why the win mattered:
The Oklahoma State Win...
• Marked the first time anyone has beaten Texas at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium four consecutive times. The Cowboys beat the Longhorns, 33-16 in 2010, 38-26 in 2011 and 38-13 in 2013.
• Improved the Cowboys to 4-0, marking the fourth time under Mike Gundy that OSU have a perfect record after four games. The previous occasions were in 2008, 2010 and 2011. For perspective, OSU had only three 4-0 starts from 1988 until Gundy took over in 2005 (1988, 1997 and 2004).
• Was the Cowboys' sixth consecutive victory, dating back to last season, marking OSU's longest win streak since the Pokes rattled off seven straight wins in 2013.
• Was Mike Gundy's 50th win over a Big 12 opponent since taking over as Oklahoma State head coach in 2005. None of Gundy's predecessors won more than 30 conference games. Among active Big 12 coaches, only Bill Snyder (109 Big 8/Big 12 wins in 23-plus seasons at Kansas State) and Bob Stoops (104 wins in 16-plus seasons at Oklahoma) have more than Gundy has amassed in 10-plus years at Oklahoma State.
• Improved the Cowboys to 7-2 in their last nine Big 12 openers.
• Improved the Cowboys to 41-5 in their last 46 games against unranked opponents, dating back to 2010.
• Improved the Cowboys to 24-6 in their last 30 games played against teams from the state of Texas, dating back to 2009.
Standout performers for OSU in its win over Texas included the following:
Offense
Marcell Ateman
Wide Receiver | 6-4 | 210 | Junior | Dallas, Texas
Oklahoma State receiver Marcell Ateman led all players with 69 receiving yards during the No. 24 Cowboys' win at Texas on Saturday. Ateman caught four passes in the contest and was part of a balanced OSU passing game that saw six different receivers collect 40 yards or more.
Defense
Emmanuel Ogbah
Defensive End | 6-4 | 275 | Junior | Houston, Texas
When Oklahoma State needed its defense to step up in the fourth quarter of its 30-27 win over Texas in Austin, it was All-America candidate Emmanuel Ogbah who rose to the occasion, sharing on two sacks on the Longhorns' final drive to force a punt that set up the Cowboys' victory. Ogbah finished the game with six tackles, two sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss in helping OSU become the first team ever to beat Texas on four consecutive trips to DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. Chosen as the best defensive lineman in the Big 12 last season, Ogbah is well on his way to earning that distinction again this year, as he has 19 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and six quarterback hurries in four games this season.
Special Teams
Ben Grogan
Kicker | 6-1 | 186 | Junior | Arlington, Texas
Ben Grogan connected on two pressure-packed field goals in the last 1:33 to first tie the game, and then deliver victory to Oklahoma State at Texas. Grogan knocked in a 34-yard field goal earlier in the game. His game-tying field goal came from 41 yards out and his game-winner was from 40. When his three successful PATs are added, he scored 12 of OSU's 30 points. On the year, Grogan has converted on eight of 10 field goals and is three of four from beyond 40 yards.
