Heaney Tabbed AL’s Top Rookie For July
August 04, 2015 | Cowboy Baseball
Former Oklahoma State All-American Andrew Heaney has been named the American League Rookie of the Month for July, it was announced by Major League Baseball earlier this week.
Heaney was dominant for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last month as the southpaw went 4-0 with a 1.98 ERA. He racked up 19 strikeouts and issued just two walks in 27 1/3 innings, and opponents hit only .233 against him.
A native of Oklahoma City, Heaney is 5-1 with a 1.97 ERA in seven starts for Anaheim in 2015. He is only the second pitcher and the first lefty in Angels history with at least six innings pitched and two or fewer runs allowed in each of his first six starts for the team.
Heaney leads all AL rookies in ERA and has not given up more than three runs in any start.
Heaney's OSU career spanned from 2010-12 during which he compiled 20 wins in 51 career appearances, and he ranks in the top 10 on the Cowboys' all-time list in strikeouts (246), shutouts (3) and innings pitched (251.2). He was a consensus All-American as a junior after going 8-2 with a 1.60 ERA and an NCAA-best 140 strikeouts.
Miami selected Heaney with ninth overall in the 2012 MLB Draft, making him the third-highest draft pick in OSU history.
