FAR HILLS, N.J. — Oklahoma State's Jordan Niebrugge will once again represent the United States with his selection on Sunday for the 45th Walker Cup Match against Great Britain and Ireland.
The Walker Cup Match is a biennial 10-man amateur team competition between the USA and a team composed of players from Great Britain and Ireland. It is played over two days with 18 singles matches and eight foursomes (alternate-shot) matches. The U.S. leads the overall series 35-8-1 after its 17-9 victory in 2013 at National Golf Links of America in Southampton, N.Y.
This year's event will take place Sept. 12-13 and will be contested at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England.
"It is an honor to be the captain for this group of talented men as we represent our country in the Walker Cup Match," said John "Spider" Miller, captain of the USA Team. "They are all very team-oriented and also committed to the spirit and tradition of the match. I believe they will compete to their maximum but also develop friendships that will last for their entire careers in golf."
This past summer, Niebrugge earned the silver medal as low amateur at The Open Championship at St. Andrews. The Cowboy senior fired an 11-under-par total of 277 to tie for sixth and finish with the lowest score by an amateur in the history of the tournament. Additionally, he was a quarterfinalist at the Western Amateur and won the NCAA New Haven Regional last spring.
In that 2013 victory, Niebrugge posted a 2-2 mark, including a 2-0 record during singles play.
The Mequon, Wis., native's selection marks the 26th time a Cowboy has been chosen for the event. He is also the fifth OSU representative to be chosen on multiple occasions.
