May 07, 2015 | Cowboy Baseball
Semifinalists for baseball's top amateur award will be announced May 22
DURHAM, N.C. -- Oklahoma State pitcher Michael Freeman is one of 30 players on the final 2015 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award watch list, it was announced today.
The Golden Spikes Award is presented annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country. Semifinalists for the award will be announced later this month.
Freeman is enjoying a breakout senior season for the Cowboys.
The 6-foot-8 southpaw has solidified a starting spot in OSU's rotation and in 11 starts is 8-2 with a 1.16 ERA. He leads the Big 12 Conference with 85.2 innings pitched, three complete games and a .184 opponent batting average and also ranks in the top five in the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts. He has allowed just six earned runs in 76.0 innings over his last 10 starts, and he ranks seventh nationally in ERA.
In Freeman's lone losses this season, he's allowed just one earned run as the Cowboys have lost those games 3-2 and 2-1.
Freeman has tied a record by capturing Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors four times this season -- March 2, 23 and 30 and April 27 -- to become one of only three pitchers in Big 12 history to achieve that feat.
In Big 12 play, Freeman is 5-2 with three complete games and a 0.80 ERA in seven starts, and he has recorded 49 strikeouts in 56 innings.
Of Freeman's non-strikeout outs this season, 134 have come via ground ball and only 32 via fly out. Factor in his 77 strikeouts, and 87 percent of Freeman's outs have come via ground ball or strikeout.
On May 22, USA Baseball will announce the 2015 Golden Spikes Award semifinalists. The list will be sent to a voting body of more than 200 people consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of the media that follow the amateur game closely, select professional baseball personnel, current USA Baseball Staff and the 37 previous winners of the award.
Fan voting will also be a part of the 2015 Golden Spikes Award as fans can vote online for their favorite semifinalists.
USA Baseball will announce its 2015 finalists on June 2, and the award will be presented June 23 in Los Angeles.
The Golden Spikes Award debuted in 1978, and Oklahoma State has had one previous winner, Robin Ventura in 1988.For more info on the Golden Spikes Award, visit www.GoldenSpikesAward.com.
