Brewer-Johnson, Geberkidane to run in Junior Championships
EUGENE, Ore. – With the NCAA season officially finished, Oklahoma State athletes started summer competition Thursday at the United States Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
The four-day meet pits the best athletes across the country against each other for a chance to represent the U.S. in the International Association of Athletics Federation World Championships August 22-30 in Beijing, China.
Kaela Edwards ended her first full outdoor season with All-America honors and the ninth-fastest 800-meter time in the NCAA. After falling short of the NCAA final because she was tripped just before the bell lap, Edwards had a strong outing in the preliminary running of the 800, grabbing an automatic spot in the semifinal. She ran a 2:04.95 and finished third in heat two to advance.
2015 NCAA Champion Chad Noelle returned to Hayward Field in the 1,500-meter run. The four-time All-American and four-time Big 12 Champion qualified for the Championships, but could not advance to the semifinal after running a 3:48.67 in heat three, finishing 21st overall.
Cowboy freshmen Arlando Brewer-Johnson and Cerake Geberkidane are both in Eugene for the Junior Championships.
Brewer-Johnson was a part of the Cowboy 4X100-meter relay team from the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He ran a personal best 10.55 in the 100-meter dash at the Big 12 Championships to qualify for the same race at the Junior National Championships.
Freshman distance runner Geberkidane qualified for both the 5,000-and 10,000-meter runs. He has already represented the United States this year at the World Junior Cross Country Championships where he finished 34th with the third fastest American time.
Geberkidane kicks things off Friday for OSU at 12:38 p.m., CT, Brewer-Johnson runs at 5:45 p.m. and Edwards' semifinal is scheduled to begin at 10:27 p.m. Friday's events will be broadcast on the NBC Sports family of networks and live streamed on USATF.tv.
