AUSTIN, Texas -- Four Oklahoma State athletes punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships Friday at the second day of the NCAA West Regional.
John Teeters was the first athlete of the day to secure a spot Eugene in the 100-meter dash. Teeters will return to the NCAA Championships for
the second straight year after running a 10.00 and finishing second in heat three, tied for the second best time of the day.
Teeters is the first Cowboy to qualify for back-to-back 100-meter semifinals in school history.
In the last women's event of the evening, OSU record-holder Ingeborg Loevnes grabbed a spot in the 3,000-meter steeplechase semifinal by
winning her heat in 9:59.18. Loevnes was a distant second for most of the race, but closed the gap on, and eventually passed, Arkansas' Jessica
Kamilos on her way to a two-second victory.
"She just ran a very patient race," coach Dave Smith said. "With two laps to go, I kind of think the competitive side of her kicked in and she
decided that she wanted to win this race."
With her achievement in the quarterfinal, Loevnes becomes the second Cowgirl to advance to the NCAA Championships in the 3,000-meter
steeplechase.
In the women's 800-meter quarterfinal, Kaela Edwards and Savannah Camacho finished first and third, respectively, in heat two and advanced
automatically to the national semifinals. Edwards won the heat in 2:03.77, putting up the fourth fastest time of the day. It will be Edwards' first trip
to an outdoor National Championship. She finished third at the 2014 Indoor Championships and was national runner-up this year in the indoor
800.
"The way that it broke out, four of the top-six seeds were in their heat, so we had to push it," Smith said. "I told them if it wasn't fast at 300 meters,
take it. Only the top-three times advance, so someone wasn't going through unless they had a fast enough qualifying time. However, Kaela took
the lead from the start and just ran a solid race."
Camacho crossed the finish line with the sixth fastest time of the quarterfinal in 2:03.91. The Big 12 800-meter Champion is heading to her first
outdoor championships. At the 2014 Indoor Championships, Camacho was the runner-up in the 800-meter run.
Edwards and Camacho join Natalja Piliusina as the only Cowgirls in school history to qualify for an NCAA outdoor semifinal in the event.
"It was a great day for Ingeborg, Savannah, Kaela and John," Smith said. "The rest of the athletes that ran today all had good races, but for most
of them it was their first regional meet, so it's pretty intimidating. After a long season like this one, I think they kind of just ran out of gas."
Despite throwing a season best 18.11m/59-5, Itamar Levi missed out on qualifying for his first NCAA outdoor championship meet, finishing 19th.
Levi's throw would be the fourth farthest in OSU history, but he already owns an 18.21m/59-9, which is the third best throw on the list.
"Tomorrow is going to be a high-pressure day for us," Smith said. "All of our athletes competing tomorrow have a chance to advance and we're
hoping to get them through."
The OSU 1,500-meter quarterfinalists had the day off today but will return to action at the Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium Saturday,
along with Viktoriia Sadokhina in the triple jump, the men's 4X100-meter relay team, Kirubel Erassa and Craig Nowak in the 5,000-meter run and Chase Ealey in the
shot put.
