OSU Advances 11 to Finals

Ealey sets OSU record, Teeters runs No. 2 100 in school history
AMES, Iowa -- Chase Ealey broke another school record and John Teeters cruised to a top-15 time in the world at day two of the Big 12 Outdoor
Championships in Ames, Iowa, Saturday.
OSU advanced 11 athletes to Sunday finals and the Cowboys scored three more points to end the day in eighth with 18 total points, while the
Cowgirls picked up six points, good enough for ninth.
"We had some good surprises and some things that didn't exactly go to plan," coach Dave Smith said. "I just want to see the kids that made the
finals go out there and fight for every inch and every second."
Chase Ealey launched a personal best 17.39m in the women's shot put competition to grab third and score the Cowgirls' first points of the meet.
Ealey broke her personal best with her second throw of the day and held the lead until the final two throws, which were the second-and fifth-best
throws in the NCAA this season. She broke her own school record on her way to scoring at an outdoor conference meet for the third straight year,
receiving her seventh All-Big 12 honor.
In the fastest race of the day, John Teeters ran a career best 10.07 and automatically qualified for the final. Teeters' time is the No. 2 OSU
wind-legal time in school history and it gives him the 11th best time in the world this year.
"For Teeters, we want him to get through the race healthy and prepare for nationals," Flaquer said. "I'm sure John would tell you that there were a
few things that he could fix, so tomorrow we're going to try to fix them. I mean, he ran a PR, so you can't have a better day than that."
Two Cowgirls and two Cowboys qualified for the 1,500-meter finals, with Natalja Piliusina and Chad Noelle each running the fastest times in their
respective heats. Piliusina charged ahead of the pack with 200 meters to go and finished the race in a season-best 4:19.77.
Cowgirl senior Caileigh Glenn also grabbed an automatic qualifying time, running a 4:27.62 after fighting back from fourth to with 60 meters left
and finishing just one-tenth of a second behind the leader.
"Natalja and Caileigh looked really good and made what's going to be a really tough 1,500-meter final," Smith said. "I'm just proud of how they
competed."
It is Piliusina's first 1,500-meter final, but the eight-time Big 12 champion owns the OSU school record and was the 2013 NCAA champion in the event before she was derailed by injuries.
Noelle moved one step closer to defending his title from a year ago in the men's 1,500. Noelle fell to fourth on the final lap, but passed the leaders
on the home stretch to grab the best time in heat two with a 3:51.96. Matthew Fayers took the final automatic qualifying spot in heat one after
edging Texas' Brady Turnbull by two-tenths of a second, taking third in 3:49.70.
"We were expecting both of those guys to get through," assistant coach Bobby Lockhart said. "Matthew looked a little rough, but hopefully he can
bounce back and get back to his bread and butter. As for the final, it's really Chad's race to lose."
A quartet of Cowgirls qualified for the women's 800-meter final as Savannah Camacho, Kaela Edwards and Kaylee Dodd each had automatic
qualifying times, and freshman Abbie Hetherington ran a 2:09.10 to claim the eighth spot.
The men's long jump final featured Cowboy freshman Arlando Brewer-Johnson in his first Big 12 final. His last preliminary jump of 7.16m put him
into the final where he picked up a point for the Cowboys and finished eighth. Brewer-Johnson also ran a personal best 10.55 in the 100-meter
dash later in the day.
"We had some really good practices coming into the meet," sprints coach Diego Flaquer said. "We thought he could jump maybe 7.15 or 7.20,
which he did, and now it solidifies that he can jump and still sprint because he got a PR in the 100, too."
Itamar Levi scored at an outdoor conference meet for the second consecutive year, giving him four All-Big 12 honors total. Levi's throw of 17.81m
earned him a seventh place finish and two points for the Cowboys.
The Cowgirl sprinters had a big day as two advanced to finals and two set personal bests.
The hurdling duo of Bailey Johnson and Sarah Robinson advanced to the 400-meter hurdles final as Johnson automatically qualified with a
personal best 1:00.65, and freshman Robinson made it to her first Big 12 final with a time of 1:03.94. Britney Presley ran her fastest wind-legal
time of 24.60 in the 200-meter prelim, and Danielle Coleman's 56.76 in the 400-meter prelim was the best of her career.
"The 400-hurdles was one of those races where we thought it was very possible for them to advance if everything went well," Flaquer said. "It
wasn't the prettiest of races, but it's always exciting to get two young kids into a final. For Sarah to do it as a freshman it's really special."
The last day of the 2015 Big 12 Outdoor Championships will feature more than 20 individual OSU athletes in 12 finals. The third day of the meet is
scheduled to begin at noon with the high jump and wrap up with the awards presentation at 7:30 p.m., at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
