Cowboys pick up 15 points in 10K
AMES, Iowa -- Kirubel Erassa won his fifth Big 12 track and field title and Brian Gohlke finished fourth in the 10,000-meter run at day one of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, giving the Cowboys 15 points Friday.
In the race under the lights at the Cyclone Sports Complex, Erassa recorded a personal best and won the 10,000-meter run in 28:50.41. Erassa
was in second for a majority of the race, but took the lead with 200 meters to go and finished with the best time by five seconds to give OSU its first win of the meet. It was the decorated senior's fifth win at a Big 12 track and field meet and his sixth overall as he claimed the cross country title in 2014.
"I'm always confident in my kick," Erassa said. "With 200 to go I knew I had to kick hard and I got it done."
Gohlke picked up five more points for the Cowboys when he finished fourth in the race with a time of 29:43.91.
Chase Ealey barely missed the women's javelin final by less than a meter and took ninth with a throw of 41.42m. Ieva Zarankaite finished just
behind her with a throw of 40.92m.
In the decathlon, Cole Verble set a personal best in the 100-meter dash when he ran a 12.12 in the opening event of the meet. After one day of
competition, Verble sits in 10th with 2866 points.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls return to the Cyclone Sports Complex Saturday for day two of the Big 12 Track and Field Championships. The day will
begin with the continuation of the decathlon and heptathlon. Open field events start at noon and open running events start at 3:30 p.m.
