Cowgirls take 4X800, Cowboys make 4X100 final
DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Cowgirl 4X800-meter relay team grabbed OSU its third win of the meet and Cowboy 4X100-meter relay team qualified
for the final at the Drake Relay, Friday.
The relay team of Sharod Selph, Tyler Jackson, Arlando Brewer-Johnson and John Teeters ran a 40.47 in its second race of the season, finishing
sixth in the prelim and qualifying for Saturday's final. The Cowboys were one of three Big 12 schools to qualify for the final.
"I thought we ran OK considering we had two very average handoffs," sprints coach Diego Flaquer said. "The other part of it was the weather. It
was cold out there, so it was a solid day for us. We'll see what lane we get tomorrow and go out and embrace another opportunity."
After running the anchor leg for the Pokes, Teeters ran in the open prelim of the 100-meter dash. He automatically qualified for the final by winning
his heat and finishing second overall with a time of 10.44.
"Teeters ran into a negative 2.5 wind, so the time is misleading," Flaquer said. "He ran a much cleaner race, though. We're probably not going to
run tomorrow because he's already got his regional mark. We just wanted to come and get back in his rhythm."
The Cowgirls followed up Thursday's record setting performance in the 4X1600-meter relay by coming within four tenths of a second of breaking
the 4X800-meter relay meet record.
Savannah Camacho, Kaylee Dodd, Kaela Edwards and Natalja Piliusina ran the relay for OSU and cruised to a nine-second win in a blazing
8:27:88.
"The record was kind of in the back of our minds," coach Dave Smith said. "It was a great field and we led from the gun to the finish. I'm just really
proud of how they ran tonight."
Piliusina, who ran the anchor leg for the meet record-breaking 4X1,600-meter relay Thursday, ran a 2:04.65 to lock up the victory for the Cowgirls.
If she had run that time in an open 800 event, it would be the ninth fastest 800 in the NCAA West region.
"To see her do what she did yesterday for us and then to see her come out tonight and run her fastest 800 in two years is really special," Smith
said. "There's still six weeks left in the season and Natalja isn't fully healthy yet, but she's getting better every week. Once she gets there, it'll be a
great thing to see."
OSU will be back in action in Des Moines, Iowa, Saturday. The Cowboys will run in the 4X100 meter final and both the Cowboys and Cowgirls will
run in the distance medley relay finals.
