OSU sweeps 4X1600, Jones sets personal best
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Oklahoma State swept the 4X1600-meter relay races at the Drake Relays, Thursday, as the men's team edged out Tulsa
and the women's quartet set a new meet record.
The Cowgirls broke the 5-year-old meet record by winning the event in 18:58.11.
Aurora Dybedokken started the race for the Cowgirls, running with the leaders for most of her mile.
"Aurora was right there at the top when she handed it off to Ingeborg Loevnes," coach Dave Smith said. "Ingeborg gave us a little bit of the lead when she gave it to Caileigh Glenn, but the Washington team ran a stellar leg and passed her."
Natalja Piliusina ran the anchor leg for the Cowgirls. She caught up to Washington and eventually passed her for the win.
"We got a great anchor leg out of Natalja against Washington," Smith said. "She may not be entirely healthy, but she knows how to race -- she's
the person you want with the stick in a situation like that."
The Cowboys group of Craig Nowak, Chad Noelle, Shane Moskowitz and Kirubel Erassa squeaked by the University of Tulsa to claim their win by
two-tenths of a second, in 16:19.47.
"The two relays were unbelievable for us," Smith said. "Craig handed off in a dead heat for the lead with Syracuse and Washington, then Chad
gave us a 15-20 meter lead going into the third leg."
Moskowitz ran the third leg and kept the Cowboys in front. He gave the baton to All-American Kirubel Erassa with a two-second lead.
"Kirubel led for almost his whole leg, but Tulsa and Washington actually passed him toward the end," Smith said. "He didn't get the lead back until
about five meters to go -- it was a great race."
The success continued into the open events, as Timauntay Jones ran a personal best 1:51.27 in the men's 800-meter run and finished fifth.
"He had a great day, too," Smith said. "Most of the guys in his group had faster times than he did, but breaking a PR by 1.2 seconds in the 800 is a
big deal."
The OSU track and field team will look to continue its success in Des Moines, Iowa, Friday with the running of the men's and women's
4X400-meter relays, men's and women's 4X800-meter relays and the men's 4X100-meter relay.
