A Look At Chambers Bay Via Peter Uihlein

What is your favorite memory from your U.S. Amateur victory at Chambers Bay?
"My favorite memory would have to be coming back to Stillwater and having people waiting at the airport to greet me when I landed with the trophy. It was awesome to see that many people come out and show their support. It really meant a lot to me."
How important was the U.S. Amateur victory to your career?
"It was very important because, at the time, it was my only "big" amateur victory. I won a few times in college and a few other amateur events but never one of the "bigger" ones and that's obviously the biggest, so to this day I'm still incredibly proud of it."
How would you best describe Chambers Bay?
"I would describe it as an American links course. It's not your prototypical links course because it's so long and wide but it still requires the same imaginative approach that links courses demand."
What challenges will the golf course present for the players?
"Well, for starters it's a lot of property to maneuver. It's a massively long course, so you'll be required to hit a lot of long irons or hybrids into par 4s with some control in order to hit it close."
What are your overall impressions of the golf course?
"I'm obviously biased, but I love Chambers and think it'll be a great test for the U.S. Open because it is so unique and not the prototypical U.S. Open course."
What are the keys to success to success at Chambers Bay?
"Hitting it far and straight are nice advantages to have, but there it's all about your control with your iron shots into the greens. Being able to utilize the slopes to your advantage and controlling the direction of your ball is crucial."
How do you think Chambers Bay will stand up as a U.S. Open venue?
"I think it'll be fantastic. It'll be something we've never seen and the USGA will do a fantastic job setting it up and using its creativity to its fullest."
What was it about Chambers Bay that fit your eye and allowed you to have such great success?
"I personally just liked all the scenic views that the course provides. It really helps you get your mind off of golf and just appreciate how beautiful the place is and how fortunate enough we are to play such a wonderful game on a magnificent piece of property."
Did you have a favorite hole and why?
"I enjoyed the 12th hole. It's a drivable par 4 that with the correct pin position you could get it really close. It just gives some excitement to the hole because it's built in the dunes and almost had bumpers on both sides that caromed the ball towards the middle. It is just a cool little unique hole."
