WICHITA, Kan. — After reaching the title match for the third year in a row, Oklahoma State's Sam Stevens claimed his first victory at the 105th Kansas Amateur on Sunday, defeating Matt Green, 1-up, at Wichita Country Club.
With Stevens' victory, he becomes the third generation of his family to win the event. His father, Charlie, won in 2010 and his grandfather, Johnny, won a pair of titles, hoisting the trophy in 1960 and 1961.
Stevens struck first in the 36-hole final with a birdie at the second before taking a 2-up lead with an eagle at the par-5 ninth. Green, a member of Kansas State's squad, made par at the 17th to cut the margin in half. The two players halved the 18th to send Stevens into the lunch break with a 1-up lead.
The duo halved the first four holes of the afternoon round before Green squared the contest with a birdie on the 23rd hole. After a birdie by Stevens at the 26th, Green answered with back-to-back birdies at the 27th and 28th holes to move in front.
Stevens won the 29th to square the match before Green used a birdie at the next to move back on top. After Stevens squared the match again at the 31st, Green carded another birdie on the next hole to retake the lead.
OSU's rising sophomore went birdie-eagle over the next two holes to reclaim the lead before the two players halved the final two holes of the match.
