Yolanda Odenyo
Cowgirl Soccer Top 20 Moments, 1996-2014
July 23, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
The Oklahoma State Cowgirl soccer program will mark its 20th season in 2015. As we celebrate two decades of milestones, OSU head coach Colin Carmichael and assistant coach Karen Hancock, who each have been with the program since its inception and served stints as head coaches to help build the program into a national power, collaborated on a list of the top 20 moments in Cowgirl soccer history. Over the next month, we'll reveal their list (which is in no particular order) daily on www.okstate.com.
Â
Yolanda Odenyo becomes first Cowgirl to earn All-America, as well as Academic All-America, honors in 2006
Â
Carmichael considers Odenyo the player that has "probably made the biggest impact on our program," and her talents on and off the field shone bright during her four years in Stillwater.
Â
As a sophomore in 2006, she made history by earning First-Team All-America honors from the NSCAA, becoming the first All-American in OSU soccer history. The Swede led the Cowgirls to 17 wins and a No. 7 national ranking that season (at the time both records for the program), as well as helped OSU earn the first NCAA Tournament win in school history.
Â
Named the 2006 Big 12 Conference Co-Player of the Year and Central Region Player of the Year, Odenyo recorded five goals and eight assists from the midfielder position.
Â
Odenyo was also named a First-Team Academic All-American in 2006 by the NSCAA.
Â
Odenyo capped her collegiate career by earning All-America and Academic All-America accolades in each of her final two seasons. She is one of only two three-time All-Americans in OSU history (along with AD Franch) and is the Cowgirls only three-time Academic All-American.
Â
Colin Carmichael: "Yolanda was a just a big-time athlete and phenomenal player, a great student and awesome person — Yolanda was the full package. You wish you could have five of her on your team every year. You know you're not going to have to worry about what she's doing off the field, you knew she was a great competitor and you knew she was a very good student."
