— Cowboy Football (@CowboyFB) July 2, 2015STILLWATER – Mike Gundy is well-known for his success at the helm of the Cowboy football program, but his time in Stillwater began long before he became head coach at Oklahoma State.
The Midwest City native quarterbacked the Cowboys for four seasons from 1986-1989, building an impressive resume as a player.
During his freshman year in 1986, Gundy set the NCAA record for most passes to start a career without an interception (138) and was named The Sporting News Outstanding Freshman Quarterback.
He built on that success throughout his career, leading OSU to a 10-2 record and a Sun Bowl win in the 1987 season, and he completed 59.7 percent of his passes in the process.
As a junior in 1988, Gundy led OSU to another 10-2 record and a Holiday Bowl win while finishing second nationally in pass efficiency. He also led an offense that produced that year's Heisman Trophy winner – Barry Sanders.
By the time he completed his career in 1989, Gundy was the Big Eight's all-time leader in passing and total offense.
His time as a player at OSU has no doubt provided a solid foundation for his success as a head coach, as Gundy is now the winning coach in Cowboy football history.
