GULLANE, Scotland — Former Oklahoma State All-American Rickie Fowler picked up his second win of the year on Sunday, firing a closing 68 to win the European Tour's Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Gullane Golf Club.
Fowler's 2-under closing round gave him a 12-under total of 268 and a one-stroke victory over Matt Kuchar and Raphaël Jacquelin.
Like his victory earlier this year at THE PLAYERS Championship, Fowler was clutch down the stretch with his wedge game. From just over 100 yards at the 18th, he stuck his approach within two feet to secure the deciding birdie.
"I saved the best swings for the last. I hit a good drive and a great wedge in there to get to 12. This has been a special week and I am really looking forward to taking this form over to next week at The Open," Fowler said.
After opening with four consecutive pars, Fowler carded his first birdie of the day at the fifth before moving back to level with a bogey at the sixth. He strung together seven consecutive pars before carding a bogey at the 14th after finding a fairway bunker to move to 1-over for the day.
However, Fowler rallied with birdies at the 15th and 16th to move into a tie for the lead and set the stage for his decisive birdie at the closing hole.
"It was unfortunate to drop a shot at 14, I was really looking forward to getting to the last four. I didn't want to take a step back and I really had to dig deep. I made some great swings coming in and I had a good look on 17 as well. I would have liked to have gotten that one to go," Fowler said.
After opening with a 66, Fowler followed with a 68 on Friday before moving into contention with a 66 during his third round.
