OSU star set to compete on soccer's biggest stage
STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State's Courtney Dike has been named to the Nigeria roster for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.
Dike, who will be a junior for the Cowgirls next season, is one of 23 players on the Super Falcons roster selected by Nigeria coach Edwin Okon.
"We are extremely proud of Courtney. To earn the right to represent your country at the World Cup is the stuff of dreams," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "It is an honor that only a select few elite athletes achieve in their career, and she has reached this goal at such a young age.
"Courtney is a terrific ambassador for Oklahoma State University, our athletic department and our soccer program. We will all be pulling for her and Nigeria to have a successful tournament."
Dike was born in Oklahoma City and raised in Edmond, Okla., and her parents, Vincent and Jacinta, are natives of Nigeria; her older brother, Bright, is a member of the country's men's national team.
Last August, Dike starred for the Nigeria U-20 National Team at the 2014 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada. She earned a spot as a starter for a Falconets team that advanced to the U-20 World Cup final, where it dropped a 1-0 decision to Germany. In six games, Dike scored a pair of goals, and in pool play against South Korea, she scored the fastest goal in FIFA Women's World Cup history as she found the back of the net just 18 seconds into the match. She also scored a goal 64 seconds into the semifinal match against North Korea to help Nigeria advance to the final.
In November, Dike was named the Discovery of the Year 2014 at the Nigerian Sports Award 2014 in Onikan Lagos, Nigeria.
In her first two seasons at Oklahoma State, Dike has played in 40 games and recorded 16 goals and seven assists. She has twice been named to the All-Big 12 Conference Second Team.
The 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup takes place in various Canadian cities from June 6-July 5. Nigeria is in Group D and begins play June 8 against Sweden in Winnipeg. The Super Falcons will also take on Australia (June 12 in Winnipeg) and the United States (June 16 in Vancouver).
