LAS VEGAS -- Former Oklahoma State wrestler and two-time NCAA champion Jordan Oliver fell in a tight 2-1 bout in the 65 kilogram championship at this weekend's Las Vegas/ASICS US Senior Nationals to produce a runner-up finish.
Oliver eased his way into the 65kg finals, where he met long-time rival and former Hawkeye Brent Metcalf. The two were tied 1-1 after the first period, but Metcalf earned the 2-1 edge when Oliver was hit with passivity late in the second period. Oliver's run to the finals included a 12-2 technical fall over Cole VonOhlen to open his tournament and a 4-3 win over Kellen Russell in the semifinals.
His second-place finish earned him a spot in the US World Team Trials in Madison, Wisc., next month.
Five other Cowboys qualified for the Trials with their top-eight finishes. 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist Coleman Scott finished third at 61 kilos. Taking fifth in that bracket was 2013 All-American Jon Morrison. Career four-time All-American Tyler Caldwell earned a fourth-place finish at 74 kilos, and volunteer assistant coach and All-American Cayle Byers finished fifth at 97 kg.
Also competing was Chris Perry, who injury defaulted at 86 kg, and club coach Frank Perrelli at 57 kg.Â
