Joe Smith Earns USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
July 01, 2015 | Cowboy Wrestling
COLORADO SPRINGS – Incoming Oklahoma State wrestler Joe Smith was named USA Wrestling and TheMat.com's Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Junior National Duals freestyle championship on June 24-28.
Smith helped lead Team Oklahoma to its second-straight Junior National Duals title as he went undefeated throughout the weekend in Tulsa, Okla.
Smith was 6-0 on the weekend, including a crucial win over 2014 Junior Nationals champion Isaiah White of Illinois in the team finals. Smith fell to a 6-2 deficit early in the match but rallied for an 11-7 win to help Team Oklahoma defeat Team Illinois, 37-28.
Other incoming Cowboys who competed on Team Oklahoma include Kaid Brock, Jordan Dieringer, Boo Lewallen and Tristan Moran, while Andrew Marsden competed for Team Illinois. Lincoln Olson, who will also join the Cowboys in the fall, wrestled for Team Michigan at the event.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
