Cowboys Wrap Up Junior World Team Trials
June 12, 2015 | Cowboy Wrestling
MADISON, Wisc. -- Three current Oklahoma State wrestlers represented OSU in the Junior World Team Trials finals, each of them producing second-place finishes.
Because of his championship performance at the U.S. Open earlier this year, Gary Wayne Harding received an automatic bid to the 60-kilogram finals, where he awaited the mini tournament winner. Meeting Harding for a best-of-three finals series was Brock Zacherl. Recently wrapping up his freshman year at Clarion, Zacherl outwrestled the Cowboy, producing an 11-0 technical fall in the first round, followed by a 10-0 technical fall in the second round to take the World Team spot at 60 kg.
At 74 kilograms, rising sophomore Chance Marsteller bulldozed his way through the bracket, tallying two wins by technical fall and a decision in the mini tournament finals. Marsteller met up with high school phenom Mark Hall in the two-of-three finals. Hall earned the World Team spot with a first-round tech fall and a second-round fall in less than four minutes.
The final Cowboy making his way to the finals series was Chandler Rogers, who just finished his redshirt season with the Pokes. Rogers started the event with a decision before a 34-second fall over No. 1 seed Riley Lefever in the semifinals. In the mini finals, Rogers posted a 10-0 tech fall over Jaden Bernstein. He went head-to-head with Dave Schultz High School Excellence national winner Zahid Valencia in the best-of-three series. Rogers fell in two rounds to the Californian to finish second at 84 kg.
Incoming Cowboys Kaid Brock (60 kg) and Joe Smith (74 kg) finished third and fourth in the mini bracket, respectively.
On Saturday, half of the senior-level weights will be contested with Frank Perrelli (57 kg), Chris Perry (86 kg) and Clayton Foster (86 kg) representing OSU.
