Current and Former Cowboys Set to Compete at US World Team Trials
June 10, 2015 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER -- Oklahoma State University will be represented well at this weekend's U.S. Senior and Junior World Team Trials with seven former Cowboy wrestlers, four current Cowboys and a club coach competing for a spot on Team USA at their respective weight.
The event will be held at Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisc., June 12-14.
Frank Perrelli, a former Cornell wrestler and current OSU club coach, will compete at 57 kilos. Perrelli recently won the 2015 Northern Plains Senior Regional title to qualify for the tournament.
At 61 kilos, two former Cowboys will battle for the team spot in 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott and 2013 All-American Jon Morrison. Scott, who now trains with Sunkist Kids in Chapel Hill, N.C., produced a third-place finish at the US Open earlier this year after falling early in the championship bracket but fighting his way through the back half. Morrison finished fifth at the event.
Representing OSU at 65 kg is Cowboy Wrestling standout and two-time NCAA champion Jordan Oliver, who had a runner-up finish at the US Open, suffering a 2-1 loss to Reece Humphrey in the final. Should he advance through the mini tournament, he will be pitted against Humphrey once again for a shot at the 65 kg spot on Team USA.
Four-time All-American and two-time NCAA finalist Tyler Caldwell will compete in a loaded 74 kg bracket, which features a three-time World Champion in Jordan Burroughs, a four-time NCAA champion in Kyle Dake and a two-time national champion in David Taylor. Caldwell recently finished fourth at the US Open.
Two-time NCAA champion Chris Perry and 2011 NCAA runner-up Clayton Foster will compete at 86 kilos. Both former Cowboys received wildcard selections from USA Wrestling for a chance to compete for the national team spot.
The final Poke competing at the senior level is Cayle Byers, who wrestled for OSU in 2012 and finished third at NCAAs. Byers finished fifth at this year's US Open to qualify for the Trials.
Four Cowboys will compete for spots on the Junior World Team, including two incoming freshman in Kaid Brock (60 kg) and Joe Smith (74 kg).
Gary Wayne Harding earned an automatic bid to the 60-kilogram finals when he took home the 2015 United World Wrestling Junior Freestyle championship earlier this year. He will await the winner of the mini tournament for a best two-out-of-three finals series.
Chandler Rogers, who won the UWW Junior Freestyle championship at 79 kg, will compete in the 84 kilo bracket this weekend.
All junior weights will be contested on Friday. At the senior level, 57 kg, 70 kg, 86 kg and 125 kg will go on Saturday, and 61 kg, 65 kg, 74 kg and 97 kg will compete on Sunday.
